Jesus is your Master, not your friend

The "Buddy Christ" picture is popular on the Internet these days.

Even available as an action figure:

http://www.eddiestrickshop.com/Merch...0001/buddy.jpg

This gives the impression to many nominal Christians that Jesus is supposed to be their pal, their confidante, their . . . buddy.

What does Jesus say about the matter?

Quote:

Matthew 11:28-30

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Not, "Come to me all that labour, and I will set you free from slavery." Just "exchange your current Master for Me."

Do friends put yokes on one another? Of course not! (Didymus, please refrain from posting your Clown Bondage Porn links, OK?)

As all True Christians™ know, we are slaves to Jesus. The Bible even says so:

Quote:

An upcoming book by Dr. John MacArthur is definitely on my to read list in 2011. It’s called Slave: The Hidden Truth About Your Identity in Christ, and in it Dr. MacArthur deals with how the Greek word doulos has often been translated as "servant" when it is actually only used to mean “slave.” With that understanding how should that impact how we see our relationship with Christ and what that means to our everyday lives?

Reverend, I don't find it believable that anyone could buy or sell a toy like that with anything but malice for Jesus and His humble followers in their heart. It is a blatant exploitation of the irony that one living thing would freely choose to devote its existence to the worship of another. And I don't find it funny in the slightest.

Praise God for bringing this up. It's so important for false Christians to realize that Jesus is not your copilot.

He is the pilot and you are in the back of the bus like Rosa Parks should have stayed.

Philippians 2:12
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Wait, what about this verse?

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

Who is Jesus talking to? Bet you a dollar it's His disciples. Oh look! So He is.

So the 11 disciples (Judas had left by this point) are the only people who Jesus laid down His life for?

Don't be obtuse. Yes, Jesus laid down His life for anyone who believed in Him but that doesn't mean He counted everyone as His friend. Jesus was speaking directly to His disciples who were stood there listening to Him. Go and read the entire chapter in context instead of quote mining bits from a fluffy bunny agenda. You will note Jesus suddenly starts speaking about THEM; in other words people who aren't present.

So Jesus is a friend to SOME people, is what you are saying?

All the disciples are dead, dear.

Serenity-Millennium 05-13-2012 05:13 PM

Re: Jesus is your Master, not your friend

Irrelevant, my friend. You are saying Jesus was the Disciples' friend, but nobody else's?

And they aren't really dead you know. The are alive in heaven, so they are still Jesus' friends.

John 15:1-6 - Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. The good branches are not cut off at death. They are alive in heaven.

John 15:13 is not incoherent with the rest of the Bible's message that we are the sheep-like servants of our LORD AND MASTER.

For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, - Psalms 95:7

Many people consider their pets to be their friends. This does not mean that we are equal to our master, or that get to have any say in how He governs us and treats us, being the dumb animals that we are.

Yes, JESUS cares very much for His pets and went so far as to temporarily die so that He wouldn't have to set His little friends on fire to punish them for all the times they did naughty things He told them not to do, but don't let it go to your head.

I must reiterate:

I saw your signature and I have to say that you are very wrong, I hate anal, I also think that being gay is wrong, therefore your whole church born thought process is wrong. If you haven't gotten the message I'm an Atheist and I'm proud of it.

Proverb:11:2: When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
Proverb:13:10: Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

I will pray for you.

What's wrong with being gay from an atheist standpoint? :shades2:

Go back a verse.

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. - John 15:14

JESUS still insists that we obey His rules. What do you think He would do if you say you are His friend but do not obey?

Well, I was just wondering why the first post said Jesus cannot be your friend. And here is what Jesus was commanding them, by the way:

John 15: 11-15"I've told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I'm no longer calling you servants because servants don't understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I've named you friends because I've let you in on everything I've heard from the Father.

16"You didn't choose me, remember; I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won't spoil. As fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father in relation to me, he gives you.
17"But remember the root command: Love one another.

Maybe if you'd use the KJV, things would be a little clearer.

John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

Sounds pretty much the same to me...
