Sometimes people say prayers in the wrong way, perhaps by repetition from a "prayer book" or by praying to deceased persons such as "Mary" who is actually a demon pretending to be Mary.

I JOHN 5 . KJV . look up
13
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

People who believe in Marys or Ganeshes or Mohammeds or finding-their-centres-and-becoming-one-with-universes do not believe on the name of the Son of God. They are adsorbed onto a demon pretending to be Mary or Ganesh or Mohammed or whatever happens when you find your centre and unite with the cosmos and prayer in all such cases reflects the will of the demon. The single objective of all false religions is to oppose God at all times and in every way so therefore all prayer outside of Christianity..the prayers of Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses for example..are opposed to God's will and are not answered. If they think they are answered then that's just something that would have happened anyway.

God explains that the origin of Christian prayer, true Christian prayer not just something made up by the Presbyterians or read from an Anglican prayer book. It is Heaven. Paul describes the process as follows:

ROMANS 8 . KJV . look up
24-25
We are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

In this way Christians know what to pray for because The Holy Spirit knows and directs our prayers. The Holy Spirit actually intercedes for us! Isn't that fantastic? God already knows your sick child needs healing because The Holy Spirit knows! And if The Holy Spirit knows then when He communicates that knowledge to us we know too! God is poised there ready to heal and what happens in so many cases? An inappropriate form of prayer is used and the child does not recover (unless the thing would have got better anyway) resulting in for example ebola outbreaks in Africa where nuns do the praying. Just think how that makes God feel. No wonder He created an ultimate fate appropriate for all heathens.

JOHN 15 . KJV . look up
6
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

But we do abide in Christ. When we see a sick child, perhaps with the ebola or suffering from dog bites or hæmophilia and we think “oh how terrible that child needs my prayers” we are correct. God is ready to heal, has been informed by The Holy Spirit what He has placed in our heart, all we need to do is pray and that child will be healed because we abide in Christ. Obviously the children whose dog-bites go septic and they die a lingering death or whose hæmophilia causes them to wither away even if isolated in a padded room or who do not recover from ebola have had people praying for them who did not abide in Christ, whose anguish at suffering all around was not communicated to them by The Holy Spirit but was just sloppy sentiment and/or who prayed to a false god or an idol of some sort like have you seen these idols? do they have a special "magic" Mr Revolting going around thinking up new designs or something? ..or who did not pray at all. Yes, that is how little they care but we have Jesus.

PHILIPPIANS 4 . KJV . context
4
Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.

. . . . . . Hallelujah! Praise Jesus!!

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
