Part 2 The council and the civil war.

This section comes from Judges 20. The tribes, having received their piece of concubine flesh, call a council at Gilead at a place specifically called the Mizpah loosely translated as watchtower.

At this council 400,000 armed men have gathered to hear the tale of the chopped up concubine. The Levite recounts the story and the tribes of Israel agree that their cousins the Benjamites are responsible for the act.

The tribes march to Gibeah the place where the rape had occurred and demand the lives of the men responsible for this. The Benjamites refuse their kinsman's request for justice.

Not only do they refuse the request, but they had heard back in verse 3 that the children of Israel were gathering this council. I suppose they took the time to prepare for war, because as soon as the tribes of Israel ask for the murderous sodomite rapists, the people of the tribes of Benjamin go on the offensive.

The order of Battle

On the Benjamite side Judges 20 tells us that they had 26,000 men. The city where the rape took place, Gibeah also sent 700 men to the battle. Among the Benjamites were 700 specialized left handers that could throw a stone at something no larger than a hair and not miss.

I'm sure that if Major League Baseball had existed at the time, they would have been salivating at the prospect.

On the Israeli side they have 400,000 men with sword.

It should be no contest. The Benjamites are in the wrong. God Himself has spoken on the matter and tells them that the men of Judah should be the first to attack (verse 18.)

I guess God told them to send Judah first to test the resolve of Israel, because the tribes go for it head on and get their butts kicked.

Day one: 22,000 good guys smitten

21And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.

Discouraged by their route at the hand of 25,000 men of Benjamin vs. 400,000 of Israel. The tribes of Israel try again with the same battle array and same game plan. They charge at Gibeah again, but this time before they do, they ask God again, "Should we do this?" God says, verse 23 "Go up against him."

God said it they do it and the result?

Day two: 18,000 good guys smitten.

Judges 20:25 And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

Satan must have a tight grip on the Benjamites or the children of God just don't have enough faith because they have lost 40,000 men against the Benjamites 25,000 or so total soldiers.

Day three the Israelites are beside themselves. They go to the house of the LORD, fast and burn offerings.

27And the children of Israel enquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

I mean, I'm sure they didn't really think the ark of the covenant actually contained Yahweh or anything, but they make their contrition just the same.

28And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

Do you remember Phinehas? He was the righteous priest who killed the Israelite and Moabite woman for miscegenation staving off Yahweh's righteous anger from destroying all of Israel.

Day three: This time God guarantees victory!

This time the Israelites send out men into the field to set an ambush.
On the third day the Israelites line up and march into the field of battle looking exactly like the same army that had been routed the previous two days. The battle begins in the same way looking like another clear victory for the Benjamites. Then the Israeli army does a feigned retreat to draw the men of Benjamin from the city.

The Benjamites are confident that they can finish it and have a clear victory over the Israelis.

32And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.

Now, it's time to spring the trap. The men that were in ambush are behind the enemies lines. They make a run for the supplies and sleeping places in Gibeah while the Benjamite army is away pursuing the Israelites.

The men in ambush destroy the enemy camp at Gibeah and then the Benjamite army is stuck between 10,000 soldiers at their rear and a few hundred thousand at their front.

46So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

So evil was finally punished that day at a very high cost in life.

65,000 dead

Up next: the aftermath of the civil war. The oath against the Benjamites and the Jews sympathy for their cousins in the face of their oath.
