Default Re: 50 shekels of silver in today's value? - 11-05-2013, 10:22 AM

Why on earth would anyone want to rape a woman who wasn't a virgin?

But since the woman's not a virgin, can we assume she's married/ widowed? If she's married, your friend has committed a serious property crime and of course should be punished in accordance with secular laws (Rom 13:1-7).

Anyway, I believe you're referring to Deuteronomy 22:28-29 -- it's always a good idea to include the passage you're referring to in your post.

If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

The value of the shekel is, as Brother WJB pointed out, variable. Our all-knowing God saw fit not to index for inflation or allow for fluctuations in commodity prices. But don't forget that marriage was part of the punishment. We may not know how much the shekel was worth, but the rapist had to support his wife for the rest of his life. He could not put her away all his days. To get an idea of the punitive nature of such a marriage, remember the words of Matthew 19:10-11.

10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

I don't know how much fifty shekels was worth, but the financial and emotional cost of supporting and living with a woman you may not even like would be incalculable. It would make a man think twice before raping someone again. It would say to other rapists, "Let this be a lesson to you!"

And sometimes the rape victim wants to marry her rapist, anyway. Tamar wanted to marry Amnon when she thought he was going to rape her (2 Sam 13:13). Amnon ended up raping her anyway and after that he hated her (2 Sam 13:14-15). If he had been forced to marry her, it would have been punishment enough. Imagine being married to a woman you hated till death do you part. In the case of Tamar and Amnon, Biblical law wasn't followed, and it was Tamar who suffered.

2 Sam 13:20 So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house.

Mt 21:42, 44 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes . . . ? And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
