My dear friend, this abomination was by design from the very beginning of the show! Not only were women in a position of authority, one particular woman was featured specifically because she was a negress and would thus offend decent Americans. Exotic, maybe, but believable? Hardly. Only, someone did believe it. And that someone grew up to be Woopie Goldberg. So... thanks Rodenberry.
