Or is the soul in two pieces that have to be joined? Does that mean there are many possible combinations (a few hundred thousand sperm and one or two eggs), each of which would result in a different person?
Or does God just inject a soul after conception?

I think it's time to fall back on scripture:
Titus 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
God clearly put this man in a position of power to do just this.
