Default Day 125. 2 Chronicles 19-21 - 02-13-2008, 08:01 PM

2 Chronicles 19-21

Today we get:
  • Jehoshaphat prospers
  • Judah versus Moab, Ammon and Seir
  • Bad king Jehoram

2 Chronicles 19

Remember in our last reading Jehoshaphat and Ahab went to war against the Syrians. Today's reading picks up when Jehoshaphat returns to Jerusalem.

2 And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.

God was angry that Jehoshaphat had gone and helped the wicked Ahab.

3 Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God.

If you only look for bad things you will find them. If look for good things, those are there to be found too. Everyone has some redeeming qualities, sometimes you have to look through all kinds of layers of filth to find them, but they are there.

Jehoshaphat then set a bunch of judges throughout the land.

6 And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment.

7 Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

Jehoshaphat was wise. He instructed the judges to not look at the person who was presenting the case, but to judge based on evidence. It didn't matter if the case was a rich man versus a beggar, the judges should give each man a fair trial.

Also he told them they couldn't take bribes.

2 Chronicles 20

1 It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.

Jehoshaphat was scared. At first he didn't know what to do. He could have done like Asa and sent money to Benhadad, but instead Jehoshaphat did the right thing.

3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

If you ask God first, he will probably help you. God should be the first option, Not the last.

6 And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?

Remember how God used the Egyptian army earlier, just to prove a point. Jehoshaphat asked the LORD to just wipe these people out, instead of just making them return home.

7 Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?

BEES!!!

9 If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help.

It's not very often that the jews actually go to God first. It's even rarer when they remember God at all.

10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;

God didn't let the Israelites invade Moab and Ammon because Moab was the son of Lot. Ammon is also commonly considered a child of Lot.

11 Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.

Why did you not let us kick their ass before, so that now they are stronger and can really beat us up?

14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;

No, this was not a pentecostal jew! He didn't speak in tongues, he spoke in the language of the time.

15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.

He said God will kick their asses for you!

So the next morning the people go out, not extremely afraid, but still a little afraid, and they get to the place where the battle is to be.

21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.

When the U.S. attacks Iran, we should hold a prayer vigil the night before, and then send out the band, with the cast of American Idol to sing psalms before we attack.

22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

After God started the attack, the Ammons Moabites and Seirs attacked and killed each other.

24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.

They all killed one another. You can imagine people using their last breath to make sure that nobody else escaped. PRAISE JESUS!!!

25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much.

Some people call it looting. Currently it's a war crime.
Quote:
With the enactment of the Hague Convention of 1907 and the Geneva Convention of 1949, it is a crime to take or destroy real or personal property during an occupation unless it is "absolutely necessary".
But back then, it was considered their right to take from the dead.

27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.

It's amazing how times change. Today, all those people should be either courtmartialed or tried for war crimes. But they were heroes 3,000 years ago.

29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel.

Why doesn't the U.S. have a special Prayer Warfare section?

32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.

Jehoshaphat=great guy.

33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.

Well, mostly a great guy.

35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:

I thought in verse 32 it said he departed not from it?

Jehoshaphat and Ahaziah tried to make a navy, but God didn't like the idea, so He made it so the boats wouldn't work properly.

2 Chronicles 21

1 Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

After Jehoshaphat died, Jehoram became king.

While Jehoshaphat was king, he sent his sons around the country to be his regents; when Jehoram became king, he had all his brothers killed.

4 Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself, and slew all his brethren with the sword, and divers also of the princes of Israel.

But it wasn't just his brothers he killed, he also took out anyone who might have a claim to the throne.

6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD.

Jehoram=bad king. He did things like Ahab, which must be really bad, to be compared to Ahab.

While he was king, the Edomites revolted.

11 Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication, and compelled Judah thereto.

Interesting, this is the first time the word FORNICATION is used in the Bible (KJV1611). Normally when fornication is used in the bible, it doesn't just mean sex between non-married people; it denotes something much worse than that. Fornication is normally used in conjunction with Idolatry. You'll note that here, you see high places and then fornication; as though the fornication was done as part of the high place worship. Fornication in this case (and most other cases) is having sex for some other God. This fornication would be ritual sex, like those Wiccans practice! Like those satan worshipers practice. Like the catholic priests practice!

Well, Elijah sent Jehoram a letter.

14 Behold, with a great plague will the LORD smite thy people, and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods:

15 And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.

A man would have to have a lot of balls to send that kind of letter to a leader of a country. Who today has the moxie to send that kind of letter to President Bush?

God then sent the Philistines to attack again.

17 And they came up into Judah, and brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king's house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left him, save Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.

When your kingdom is robbed of all the princes and queens, you haven't got much to live for.

19 And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.

So Jehoram's guts fell out. The people were so happy that he was gone, that they didn't even have a funeral. They didn't lower the flag to half staff. They just sort of said "good riddance" and installed the next king.

He didn't even get buried in the tomb of the kings.

So what have we learned today?

1. Ask God first. He'll then kill ALL your enemies.

2. If you go to war versus the jews, it's best to leave your valuables at home. If not, they will strip you down to your undies (if you are lucky they will let you keep your undies) and they will take everything you had.

3. When God really hates you, he makes your intestines fall out of your ass.
