By "we" you mean your big government loving liberal pals?
Businesses are fully capable of deciding on their own pay with employees without big government thugs intervening and FORCING them to pay more. What if an employee's work is only worth $14 an hour and their base wage is $10 an hour? The employers will be FORCED to lower their wages to $9 an hour in order to prevent losses. If they are forced to lower the wages to an amount that is lower than minimum wage, pretty soon the job becomes more trouble than it's worth. You'd have employees taking advantage of this "overtime" loophole to work 120 hours in one week and then take time off the next two weeks in order to get paid 50% more for the same amount of work.
What about employers who prevent their employees from working more than 40 hours a week, thus triggering the overtime pay? Well, now that is just another job killed by the Obama administration! An employee would have worked 45 hours to make money for his family, but thanks to Obama that employee is now locked to a strict 40 hours a week, unable to provide more!
Anyone who thinks their work suddenly becomes 50% more valuable after the 40 can already sign a specific contract with their employer stating as such. Maybe one employee would want to ask for overtime pay but another wouldn't, giving that other employee preferential treatment in the hiring process. But I guess that is too much freedom and not enough big government intervention for liberals
. God forbid we should have more jobs if it means liberals don't get a warm fuzzy feeling in their heart about "helping" the lower class when they're actually hurting them.
If anything, due to fatigue work probably becomes LESS valuable after 40 hours, so workers should be paid at a lower rate, but you don't Republicans arguing that we should have a government mandate to have everyone paid less after an arbitrary point. Why? Because Republicans believe in freedom, and they believe that people are adults and are capable of negotiating agreements with businesses on their own without big government regulations giving them "help" that they didn't want and didn't ask for.
Overtime pay is simply devastating to the lower and middle class that need every hour of work they can get. This recession would have been over years ago, and it probably never would have started to begin with if we got rid of big government interventionists policies eg. Minimum wage laws, anti-trust laws, overtime laws, corporate tax, business license requirements, child labor laws.
