Default Day 205. Isaiah 13-15 - 09-30-2009, 09:45 PM

Isaiah 13-15

Isaiah 13

1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.

The burden is an important message. Remember, Isaiah died in roughly 685 BC. Judah fell to the Babylonian Empire in 586 BC. Most people would have expected a prophecy against the Assyrians, as they were the biggest army at the time, but since Isaiah speaks for the LORD, he correctly told that Babylon would be coming, and not Assyria.

4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.

This verse references when Cyrus (the great) came to take over Babylon.

5 They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.

Cyrus the Great, was Persian. Remember, the Persians are actually from Iran. Persia isn't referenced in the Bible (KJV1611) until 2 Chronicles 36, where it is mentioned that the people were in Babylon until they were released by the kingdom of Persia. This is why the Persians aren't specifically named in Isaiah as the multitude, nobody knew they existed yet. It's amazing how little the Jews in the Old Testament got out and traveled. They seem to be completely different than any other nation in history. They took over there land, and then they just tried (unsuccessfully) to defend it. You don't read many stories of them going out to conquer other civilizations. Everyone else traveled there. Over the past 3,000 years, that area has been conquered by: Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Alexander (greece) Rome, Ottomans, Crusaders, Egypt, Britain... and in that time, Israel has conquered... um... nothing other than Israel itself. It's odd how this people/religion/god, is the one that has survived history better than any other. They've been conquered and dragged off to foreign lands. They've been killed by the millions in both antiquity and modern times, but still they are the first ones to be claimed by God.

6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.

A skeptic might say that these events were written after the fact. Possibly in the time of Cyrus/Ezra.

9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.

Remember, it was Cyrus who then released Ezra and 50,000 jews to go back to Jerusalem.

16 Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.

I believe that should be raped, instead of ravished. Ravishing normally is presented as taking pleasure in a woman. Raping is an act of power, that isn't necessarily sexual.

19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

The fall of Babylon is predicted hundreds of years before it happens. Of course, it's not necessarily hard to predict that an empire will fall, as all empires up until now, the ones currently going, have fallen. Modern empires will fall to.

Isaiah 14

1 For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.

Once again, we have a prophecy. This one prophecies two events in the future. Remember, Judah hasn't been taken away yet. God, when talking to prophets, is like a good chess player. He thinks 2 moves ahead. Here, he's talking about the people (who were led by Ezra) coming back to their land. Remember from earlier, when Jacob is mentioned, that it refers to the entirety of the Hebrew people, and not just the northern or southern kingdoms. The entirety of the tribes will be taken captive. Already most of the north is gone, but Isaiah is telling that the south will be gone, and then set free too.

4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!

Babylon will be destroyed. Which is exactly what Cyrus did.

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Ok, what is Isaiah talking about here? In one breath, he goes from speaking about the fall of the king of Babylon, to the fall of Lucifer. (This is the only mention of the word Lucifer in the Bible (KJV1611)). Satan is mentioned in 49 verses. Devil is in 57 verses. This is the only mention of Lucifer. Lucifer is the morning star. Most people associate this with the "fall of the angels" which has no biblical basis.

13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

Again, people claim that Satan/Lucifer, attempted to take over heaven; this is associated directly with the king of Babylon, who tried to kill off the gods of the people he took captive.

15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Ok, so the king is sent down to hell, the place where the average joe's dead bodies are thrown, he is no more special than any other person, he doesn't get a crypt, a mausoleum, or a pyramid, he goes to the place where poor people go. Or, Satan is tossed into the fiery pit of hell.

18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.

19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.

So, this is either the story of the king of Babylon, or Satan. If it's satan/the devil, then modern christianity gives Satan way more power than is ascribed to him in the Bible. How often do you hear christians say that the devil is causing them grief? In Isaiah, (if it refers to satan) we see that he has no power, he is there to be walked upon. Not some magical creature that has as much power as they give to God.

22 For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the LORD.

The satan part is now over, and he's back to talking about Babylon.

25 That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.

Remember, the Assyrians had taken away the northern kingdom, and the southern kingdom was paying tribute so that they wouldn't be taken away.

28 In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.

Ahaz died in roughly 715, he was replaced by Hezekiah.

29 Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.

Remember, the jews were constantly fighting the philistines (palestina). When the jews were taken away, the palestines kind of took back some land. So when the southern kingdom was taken away, they are warned that they shouldn't be too happy, because eventually they will be coming back. Just look at when Ezra returned there. Also look at 1948.

Isaiah 15

1 The burden of Moab. Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence; because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence;

The Moabites are the descendants of Job and one of his daughters. They are related to the Hebrews, but they are usually the hated.

2 He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, the high places, to weep: Moab shall howl over Nebo, and over Medeba: on all their heads shall be baldness, and every beard cut off.

Long beards show wisdom and age, having the beard cut off is a symbol that the person has been shamed.

It was during the Persian take over, that the people and land of Moab disappeared. After then, they are no longer mentioned.

Isaiah kind of laments their loss.

5 My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives shall flee unto Zoar, an heifer of three years old: for by the mounting up of Luhith with weeping shall they go it up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise up a cry of destruction.

Complete genocide of the Moabites is predicted.

9 For the waters of Dimon shall be full of blood: for I will bring more upon Dimon, lions upon him that escapeth of Moab, and upon the remnant of the land.

God not only allowed it to happen militarily, but determined that anyone who escaped from the Persian army would be eaten by lions.

There are still a few people who had moabite blood in them. Remember, David's grandmother Ruth was a Moabite. So, since Jesus was in the line of David, Jesus had some of the incestuous blood of Lot and his daughter in him.

So what have we learned today.

1. The king of Babylon might have been the devil.

2. Lucifer is to be trodden underfoot, a thing that's buried in the ground has no power. It's only modern christians who are scared of a thing that is powerless.

3. If Jesus traces his family tree back far enough, he'll find Lot getting drunk and knocking up Lot's daughter.

So much for the assertion by the Christ killers that there is no historical Palestine.

Christians are superior because we possess an understanding that unbelievers lack. It is through the Power of Jesus only the converted mind is able to understand what is going on in the world; what the Communists are really up to; what Satan's intentions are. Most unbelievers do not even believe in Satan and cannot understand his tactics.
