Default Day 231. Jeremiah 25-27 - 11-19-2009, 07:09 PM

Jeremiah 25-27

Jeremiah 25

1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon;

Some people claim that the Bible (KJV1611) isn't a history book, that it's just a book of stories. Here we see an actual date, we can compare this time to other records. We know when this happened.

Look at the timeline.

Jehoiakim became king in 609. This is his fourth year, and the first of Nebuchadnezzar. This is in 605.

3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that is the three and twentieth year, the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened.

So this is 605, Jeremiah's 23rd year of speaking, add 23ish and you get Jeremiah beginning in 627. Josiah began in 640, subtract 13 and you get 627. All these numbers add up. (The math does work, regardless of the 23 number, for example he may have started in Feb. 627 and it's now March 605. The first year was 627, second was 626, the tenth was 618, the twentieth was 608, 21 was 607, 22 was 606, and 23 was 605, so it does work.)

Jeremiah then mentions that the people didn't turn from their evil, so they are going to go away.

9 Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations.

Nebuchadnezzar II is the Nebuchadrezzar listed here. His name means "Oh god Nabu, preserve my firstborn son". Nebuchadnezzar was the first son of Nabopolassar, who was founder of the Babylonian dynasty known as the Chaldean Dynasty, or the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Nabu was the Babylonian god of wisdom and writing. He was the son of Marduk. The name Mordechai comes from Marduk. It's odd that God would use a guy named after another God to be his servant. You'll note that Nebuchadnezzar didn't claim to be a servant of God, it's another example of God using someone as a tool to perform his will.

11 And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

This is prophecy, in a book of history. So if this is the case, and we know when the people went away, then if it's correct, 70 years later, something else will happen.

To the timeline...

605, Babylonians invade; right after the writing of this.
586, Jews were deported...

so now we need something in 535, or 516...

539, Babylon falls to Cyrus.
536, the temple rebuild project was started. Remember the 23 math... it works here as well.
516, the temple was completed.

PRAISE JESUS!!!

12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.

See how crappy Iraq is today. It is a dust bowl. It is horrible. The king of Babylon at the end was Nabonidus (Nabu is praised).

15 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.

God has a cup of fury. I have a couple of mugs and a rather nice collection of glasses, but I don't have a cup of fury. That'd be the piece de resistance of my collection.

Now we get a list of who all gets to have a drink:Egypt, Uz, Philistines, Ashkelton, Azzah, Ekron, Ashdod, Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyrus, Zidon, the isles, Dedan, Tema, Buz, Arabia, the desert, Zimri, Elam, Medes, the north, and all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth... and the king of Sheshach.

Sheshach, what is Sheshach? Shechach is Babel (Babylon). This is apparently Atbash cipher, where the first letter in the alphabet is substituted for the last letter, a=z; b=y; c=x.... x=c; y=b; z=a) except done with hebrew letters. Apparently in hebrew Atbash, sh=b; ch-l. so... (vowels don't really count)

sh sh ch

b b l

So the king of babel, (Babylon) is the last to drink from the fury cup. That's the worst part, because he either has very little to drink and it's everyone else's backwash, or he's got to drink a whole lot.

27 Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.

It's probably got a high ABV, so that's why everyone got drunk and puked and fell over.

33 And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.

Sounds very armageddon-ish.

Jeremiah 26

1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word from the LORD, saying,

This would be 609.

2 Thus saith the LORD; Stand in the court of the LORD's house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD's house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word:

Jeremiah goes to the gate of the temple, and he says that the people need to change, or they are all going to die, and Jerusalem will be wiped out, just like Shiloh (the holy city of the northern kingdom).

8 Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die.

People don't like being told bad news. Here, they didn't like it so much that they chose to kill Jeremiah.

11 Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy to die; for he hath prophesied against this city, as ye have heard with your ears.

Oddly, some people seemed to have Jeremiah's back.

17 Then rose up certain of the elders of the land, and spake to all the assembly of the people, saying,

I thought there were no wise people left?

18 Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

Micah began in 736. Hezekiah became king in 715. We'll get to Micah in day 271.

19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? did he not fear the LORD, and besought the LORD, and the LORD repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we procure great evil against our souls.

Hezekiah repented and made many religious reforms. So at least Micah was able to influence a king.

20 And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the LORD, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjathjearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah.

Who the hell is Urijah?

21 And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death: but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt;

His name is also spelled Uriah. Jehoiakim was king in 609, so he's a contemporary of Jeremiah. He probably didn't have the family influence that Jeremiah had.

Jehoiakim chased Urijah to Egypt, brought him back and killed him.

24 Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.

That name is familiar. Ahikam the son of Shaphan was listed back in 2 Kings 22, he was one of the guys who helped find the law of the LORD that had been misplaced for many years (during Josiah). Josiah started in 640, and this is at least 609. So Ahikam is an old guy, possibly the elder who said to not kill Jeremiah in verse 17.

Jeremiah 27

1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

Roughly 609.

2 Thus saith the LORD to me; Make thee bonds and yokes, and put them upon thy neck,

Sweet, more performance art. This time Jeremiah is going to be yelling at the people while wearing a yoke.

6 And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him.

God claims he gave the known world to the king of Babylon. Funny, here, it's spelled Nebuchadnezzar, while in Jeremiah 25 it was Nebuchadrezzar.

8 And it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish, saith the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.

During Jehoiakim's reign, Judah began as a tribute paying state of Egypt. in 605, the Egyptians were defeated by the Babylonians at Carchemish, that caused Jehoiakim to change sides, and start paying tribute to Nebuchadnezzar. In about 602, he switched sides again, and started paying tribute to the Egyptians. This is what many people believe caused the siege and fall of Jerusalem in 596/7.

In this verse, we see that God wants Judah to pay tribute to Babylon, and not to Egypt. The nation that didn't pay tribute would be taken away.

9 Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon:

God really liked Nebuchadnezzar, regardless of him being named after a different god.

12 I spake also to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live.

So Jeremiah was saying this for three kings, to pay tribute, Jehoiakim, Jeconiah (100 day king), and finally Zedekiah.

17 Hearken not unto them; serve the king of Babylon, and live: wherefore should this city be laid waste?

The them, is false prophets. Also people who just plain old give bad advice.

19 For thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars, and concerning the sea, and concerning the bases, and concerning the residue of the vessels that remain in this city.

These were pretty much the last remaining treasures in the temple. The pillars, the bases, the remaining vessels, and the sea. Who remembers the sea?
Quote:
2 Chronicles 4:2 Also he made a molten sea of ten cubits from brim to brim, round in compass, and five cubits the height thereof; and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about.

Remember the molten sea... pi=3. That was one of the few things left in the temple.

20 Which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took not, when he carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah from Jerusalem to Babylon, and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem;

Jeconiah was taken away, and when he was, most of the temple was looted. The molten sea was left.

Soon, it'll be taken away too.

So what have we learned today?

1. Jeremiah was much more connected than Urijah.

2. God can use whoever and whatever he wants to get his message across, or to do his will. He can use Satan to do it if he wants. That doesn't make the devil a worshiper of God, or even right, it is just a tool.

3. The yokes on you.
