Bible Day 333: 2 Corinthians 7-9 - 11-11-2016, 03:32 PM

Chapter 7

In this chapter Paul explains that everything that he said so far was for our own good. We need to cleanse ourselves from the filthiness of the flesh and spirit (2 Cor 7:1). Paul (back to the royal "we") has not corrupted anybody (2 Cor 7:2), and he doesn't speak to condemn us (2 Cor 7:3). He is happy in his suffering (2 Cor 7:4-5), because he's been comforted:

2 Corinthians 7:6-7
6 Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
7 And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.

Even though that Paul knows he has hurt the previous letter recipients' feelings, he will not repent for that (2 Cor 7:8). He is happy that his letter was so hurtful and that it brought lost souls back to the flock (2 Cor 7:9). Godly sorrow is good, as it creates repentance (2 Cor 7:10-11). Paul wrote that letter out of his care for the letter recipients (2 Cor 7:12). That was the stick; now Titus is the carrot (2 Cor 7:13-15), and Paul has confidence that we will know how to behave from now on (2 Cor 7:16).

Chapter 8

In this chapter Paul talks about the importance of generous tithing. He begins by giving Macedonians as the example of charity (2 Cor 8:1-5).

Their tithing was so good, that now Titus should work the same miracle on the Corinthians:

2 Corinthians 8:
6 Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.

Charity is important (2 Cor 8:7), as it serves to prove the sincerity of Christian love (2 Cor 8:8). Jesus became poor for us (2 Cor 8:9), so tithe, tithe, tithe (2 Cor 8:10-12). As others tithed in time of their abundance, now we need to tithe accordingly (2 Cor 8:13-15). Titus will collect the tithes (2 Cor 8:16-23) which will be the proof of Christian love (2 Cor 8:24

Chapter 9

This chapter continues with the importance of tithing. Paul admits that he is boasting to other churches about Corinthians just like did to Corinthians about Macedonians in the previous chapter, in hopes of provoking everybody to be more charitable (2 Cor 9:1-5). God will reward a good tither:

2 Corinthians 9:6-10
6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
9 (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.
10 Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness

Charity not only supports the poor but is also a way of giving thanks to God (2 Cor 9:11-12) and glorifying God (2 Cor 9:13-14), and we should thank God for that opportunity (2 Cor 9:15).
