The Federal Department of Agriculture has written to Chinese authorities demanding assurances that measures are in place to prevent further contamination of frozen berries.
More than a dozen people across Australia have so far been infected with hepatitis A after eating frozen berries sourced from China.
The latest confirmed case was in WA and was announced by WA Health's epidemiologist Dr Gary Dowse on Wednesday morning.
Poor hygiene among workers and contaminated water supplies are thought to be behind the contamination.
In a statement, the Department of Agriculture said it was engaging Chinese government authorities through Australian embassy staff in Beijing, seeking assurances about the safety of further shipments of frozen berries.
Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said country-of-origin labelling and consuming locally produced food were the most effective ways to ensure food safety.
"I think we have to strengthen our labelling laws and we currently have a review before us which I believe needs to be stronger than what it actually came into my office [as]," he said.
Mr Joyce said it was important the public were able to make informed decisions regarding their purchases.

"If you want ... better control of faecal contamination, which is a polite word for poo, if you want to make sure it's a clean, green product with the most stringent protections on it, then look for the country of origin and make sure you buy Australian," he said.
"We have stronger sanitary laws, we have stronger oversight to make sure we have a cleaner, green product than what comes in from overseas.
"It's slightly dearer but it's safer."
But Prime Minister Tony Abbott indicated he was not in favour of changing food labelling laws, which he said would increase the cost for consumers.
"It's always got to be a question of getting the balance right because every time we demand more regulation, every time we demand different types of labelling, we add to the costs and the consumer has to pay," he said.

Well, of course Tony Abbott doesn't care - he's a Mary-worshipper fully immersed in cathlick rectal demons.

The number of people infected is expected to rise into the hundreds if not thousands. Thousands of white Australians infected by slant homersexural diseases! No doubt there will be some Christians in that number. All from unwittingly eating slant poo with all its rectal demons.

It is a well established fact that Chinamen rarely bathe and that they are the filthiest race on Earth. Even Negroes in darkest Africa bathe more often than Chinamen. Water sources in China are badly polluted, mostly because when a Chinaman sees a river or lake, he will usually go over to it and pee in it. Berry growers, knowing that Chinamen only eat rice and fish heads, believe that China is a perfect place to grow berries. Chinamen work cheaper than Mexicans and they don't eat berries, so it seems a perfect arrangement. What could go wrong?

Well, obviously, the berry merchants didn't take into account the Chinamen's urination habits. Further, the Chinaman will also fling dung into a body of water if no one is looking, exacerbating the problem when that water is used to wash the berries. Also, most Chinamen think Australia is part of godless England and they hate the English with a burning passion. There is little a Chinaman enjoys more than vexing the English.

My advice is to avoid Chinamen and their foodstuffs at all times.

Clearly, this is an unconsidered possibility that cannot be ignored. Or, it could be a combination of both causes or even both causes with one or more other causes as well.

I doubt it's possible. Although the abos eat all sorts of abominations, they have an allergy to work, so couldn't have gained access to the factory where the slant berries are packaged.
