Bible Day 340: Colossians 1-4 - 11-24-2016, 07:06 PM

Chapter 1

Like the previous letter, this one is also directed from Paul and Timotheus (Col 1:1), and Paul switches between singular and plural 1st person through the letter. He/they begin with greetings in the name of Jesus (Col 1:2), and always pray for us (Col 1:3). Paul (and Timotheus) have heard of Colossians' faith and love (Col 1:4), and the reward awaits in Heaven (Col 1:5-6). Paul has heard some news about a fellow True Christian™ Epaphras (Col 1:7-8) and continues to pray for Colossians (Col 1:9-11), never forgetting to thank God for everything He did for us, including forgiving our sins (Col 1:12-14). God is the Creator of everything (Col 1:15-18), and the redemption comes through His blood (Col 1:19-20). So while we used to be alienated and struggling, as True Christians™ washed with His Blood we are blameless:

Colossians 1:21-23
21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

In this last verse Paul makes sure that we know that role of Timotheus in this letter is akin to a paper weight, and the voice we hear in this letter belongs to Paul only. Paul is our minister who suffers for us (Col 1: 24-25), as he reveals the mystery which was hidden for ages (Col 1:26-29).

Chapter 2

Paul is sad he hasn't seen the Colossians for a while (Col 2:1), unable to comfort them and guide on the right path to Salvation (Col 2:2-3). Beware of false prophets (Col 2:4), and while Paul is absent in flesh he's with all of us in spirit (Col 2:5). We should follow Jesus (Col 2:6-7) and beware of philosophers:

Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

We are complete in Jesus (Col 2:9-10). In fact, being filled with Jesus is so good that we don't need circumcision anymore:

Colossians 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

Jesus fixes lack of circumcision (Col 2:12-13) - He pretty much nailed it:

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Jesus triumphed over these outdated circumcision rules (Col 2:15), as well as the outdated dietary laws and Saturday as the holy day:

Colossians 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

That's because Jesus is above the Old Testament law (Col 2:17). Don't listen to bullies (Col 2:18), but follow Jesus (Col 2:19-23).

Chapter 3

If you want to be Saved™ you need to think less about the earthly things and concentrate more on the Heavenly things (Col 3:1-2), because Jesus is our life (Col 3:3-4). Avoid things which bring God's Wrath:

Colossians 3:5-6
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

The list of sins continues (Col 3:7-10). All True Christians™ are equal in the eyes of God, because we're already been selected by God from the midst of the Unsaved Trash™:

Colossians 3:11-12
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

We need to forgive each another (within the True Christian™ community), to be charitable towards each other, teach each another, let Jesus rule over our hearts, and whatever we do has to be done in Jesus' name (Col 3:13-17).

Obviously, the equality mentioned in Col 3:11 refers to men only - women are always inferior:

Colossians 3:18-19
18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

Please note the use of different verbs: wives need to submit, while husbands should love. Just as women, children also should submit to their parents (Col 3:20) and fathers should not anger their children (Col 3:21).

Even though in Christ there are no differences between slaves and masters (Col 3:11), social inequalities are a must for a society to function properly. Therefore, slaves need to obey their masters just like women need to obey their husbands and children their fathers:

Colossians 3:22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;

Those who follow these directions will receive a reward in Heaven (Col 3:23-24) and those who don't follow will receive punishment in Hell (Col 3:25)

Chapter 4

Slavery has always been a necessary aspect of life - whether 2000 years ago when slaves were in every Christian household or now when slaves in other countries produce goods used in every Christian household.

Therefore, Christian masters should be just and fair towards their slaves:

Colossians 4:1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

Christian slave owners should thank God for their comfy social position:

Colossians 4:2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

Prayer is answer to everything (Col 4:3-4). Be wise and graceful (Col 4:5-6).

Then Paul moves to more recipient-specific business, talking about people he's been sending to Colossians, and others who send their greetings (Col 4:7-14), then he asks Colossians to greet others in his name (Col 4:15), and to share his letter with the other churches (Col 4:16). Archippus is named to head the ministry now (Col 4:17), and Paul ends with final greetings (Col 4:18).
