Default Guidance needed for an (as yet unsaved) newbie - 06-03-2013, 08:53 AM

I am still very new here and hope I am not speaking out of turn but I have an issue that simply must be shared in the hope that the Lord will give me his peace.

I have always had a musical bent and there is little I enjoy more than playing with my saxophone in the evening. I normally play alone but am occasionally accompanied by a friendly group of musicians from my Bible Studies class. I don’t only play sax, I particularly enjoy tromboning, didgeridoo and French horn. I can blow anything to be honest. It makes me very popular and I receive regular entreaties from musicians to come and play with them.

I have been asked if I would like to join a band and this is a worry to me. Frankly I find some of their music a little ‘racey’. I fear they cross the fine line between acceptable and downright evil. They play a style of music which can only be described as ‘rock and roll’. I know there is a fine tradition of rock gospel out there but am disconcerted that they pay little regard to glorifying the name of Jesus, the guitarist does not even know the chords to ‘Michael Row the Boat Ashore’!

I am torn my friends, deeply torn. Should I remain pure in my music or should I go on the road with a group of people that might be gay, atheist, paedophile, drug-abusing Satan worshippers?

Now I understand how Jesus must have felt wandering through the Judean desert.

I need the advice and guidance of an elder here. I would welcome help from a more experienced man of God, somebody to take me in his firm hand and show me the right way to proceed.

Lord, hear my prayers.

There is always something to be feared from expressing yourself artistically.

Next you will be singing show tunes and riding a bicycle

Amos 5:23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

Think on.

YIC

1 Corinthians 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

Revelation 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Colossians 3:23-24 says: "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men, knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.". When you play music, choose to play that which glorifies the Holy Name of the Lord Jesus and that which is pleasing to Him. If you use that as your guide, you will not go wrong in your choice of music. There is much information on this forum regarding GODLY music choices, so use the search function to find these posts by godly and experienced folks and read up!

Joshua 1:6: "Bee strong, and of a good courage: for vnto this people shalt thou diuide for an inheritance the land which I sware vnto their fathers to giue them".
