Default Day 203. Isaiah 7-9 - 09-28-2009, 08:39 PM

Isaiah 7-9

Today, we'll be getting into some real prophecy.

Isaiah 7

1 And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.

First, though, we have to start with some history. Remember, Uzziah was the first king, Jotham was the second, and not Ahaz is the third king of Judah that Isaiah was prophet during.

At this point, Ahaz is king. Rezin (Syria) and Pekah (Israel) went to war against Judah. They weren't winning.

3 Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field;

Here, we meet one of Isaiah's sons, Shearjashub, his name means "remnant will return" or "only a remnant will return".

4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.

God, through Isaiah, said to not worry about Rezin and Pekah.

11 Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.

God then has Isaiah tell Ahaz to pick a sign to prove that God is on his side and that they (Judah) will win.

12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.

Ahaz didn't pick a sign, he may have thought he was being tested, but God really wanted him to pick something to prove that God was on his side.

14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Well, this is quite a sign. Here we have one of the best prophecies about Jesus. Isaiah 7:14, remember that.

16 For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.

God, is somewhat pissed at Ahaz, He claims that Ahaz hates the place, since he isn't willing to do what God wants to protect the land. God has offered him, not just insurance, but insurance with no deductible, including accident forgiveness, and a lifetime warranty. Ahaz said he didn't need the warranty, even though the warranty was freely given. You gotta have that true-coat.

Isaiah then prophesies that the people will be put to shame (have their heads and beards shaved), and that everything good in Judah will go away.

Isaiah 8

1 Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man's pen concerning Mahershalalhashbaz.

Maher-shal-al-hash-baz. Mahershalalhashbaz is Isaiah's second son. Why do people name their kids Isaiah, but you don't see any Mahershalalhashbaz's or Shearjashub's walking around today? Mahershalalhashbaz means "Pillage hastens, looting speeds". The name is in reference to the impending plunder of Samaria (Israel) and Damascus (Syria) by the Assyrians.

3 And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.

Went unto here means had sex with.

4 For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.

So, Isaiah has said that from the time that the child is conceived to when it can cry, Syria and Israel (not Judah) will be taken away.

Assyria attacked, and left Judah alone.

8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.

Pass through, is almost like pass over.

12 Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.

The confederacy would have been an alliance with Syria and Israel. So long as Judah stayed out of Assyria's way, Assyria wouldn't totally destroy them. Assyria did invade Judah, but they didn't take over the whole place.

15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

Here we see that many of Judah will be taken away. Many, not all.

17 And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.

This is not the patient kind of wait. This is wait, like a waiter, or a waitress. It's an active thing, not a patient thing. If God is out of water, you had better get him some. And he wants some more napkins too.

Isaiah 9

1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Zebulun and Naphtali were in the northern part of Israel, where the Assyrians first attacked. Those places will get an extra special blessing, as you notice, they are in Galilee, that's where Jesus did most of his ministry.

4 For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

Remember the battle of Midian in Judges 7? Midian was utterly destroyed. That's the kind of victory that is coming. (That's why the jews expect the messiah to be a military leader)

5 For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

The soldiers clothes will be covered in blood, but they won't need them anymore, because the battle is over, and all the wars have been fought, so they can just use their battle gear for firewood.

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

And then, when Jesus was born, he led the Hebrews in a revolt against the Romans and killed them all, and Israel reigned supreme.

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

When the messiah comes, his government will last forever! That government is not currently located in Rome.

8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

"Jacob" refers to all of the Israelite's, both of Israel and Judah.

9 And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,

Samaria was the capital of the north, Ephraim was the largest tribe.

10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.

The people claimed they would be able to rebuild without the LORD.

12 The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

Instead, God had successive waves of people attack, anything that they saved the first time, was destroyed by the second group. God added insult to injury.

14 Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.

This is still prophecy. Of course, the oldest version of this is from roughly 100 BC. So that's still written 600 years AFTER the events took place. Was the text revised, NO THE LORD PRESERVED HIS WORD AND DID NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO ALTER HIS WORD TO MAKE IT ACTUALLY BE CORRECT!!!

19 Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

God is angry, he's not going to let them rest until his anger has subsided.

So what have we learned today?

1. When God gets angry, entire civilizations have a tendency to be wiped out.

2. The messiah is coming, and he'll wipe out the enemies, just like Gideon did at Midian.

3. Pekah was the king of Israel, but his name isn't used very often, only once. Imagine if George W. Bush was always (and only) referred to as the son of George Bush. He's a leader all his own, but only gets to be called his father's son.

Isaiah 8:18

Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.

Now we have established where God resides, but not in the way the Greek gods live on Mt. Olympus. God lives in Mount Zion. This is a metaphorical mountain meaning Heaven, surely.

Isaiah 8:22
And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.

Not goth at all.

Christians are superior because we possess an understanding that unbelievers lack. It is through the Power of Jesus only the converted mind is able to understand what is going on in the world; what the Communists are really up to; what Satan's intentions are. Most unbelievers do not even believe in Satan and cannot understand his tactics.

I found this to be a good takeaway from Chapter 9.

Verse 17
Therefore the LORD shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

He sure is mad at Israel in this verse! I would hate to have that sort of judgment passed against me by God!
