Shunning Making A Comeback! -
01-19-2008, 02:33 PM
Praise Jesus! I am happy to report that the practice of shunning has been making a comeback amoung Independant Baptist Churchs all acroos this great Christian land! The fact is, some of the other Pastors and I have been discussing and praying over a list of certain loudmouthed gossiping ladies who seems to have forgotten their place and yes I mean you Miss Shirlee!

Banned From Church
Reviving an ancient practice, churches are exposing sinners and shunning those who won't repent.
On a quiet Sunday morning in June, as worshippers settled into the pews at Allen Baptist Church in southwestern Michigan, Pastor Jason Burrick grabbed his cellphone and dialed 911. When a dispatcher answered, the preacher said a former congregant was in the sanctuary. "And we need to, um, have her out A.S.A.P."
Half an hour later, 71-year-old Karolyn Caskey, a church member for nearly 50 years who had taught Sunday school and regularly donated 10% of her pension, was led out by a state trooper and a county sheriff's officer. One held her purse and Bible. The other put her in handcuffs.
The charge was trespassing, but Mrs. Caskey's real offense, in her pastor's view, was spiritual. Several months earlier, when she had questioned his authority, he'd charged her with spreading "a spirit of cancer and discord" and expelled her from the congregation. "I've been shunned," she says.
Her story reflects a growing movement among some conservative Protestant pastors to bring back church discipline, an ancient practice in which suspected sinners are privately confronted and then publicly castigated and excommunicated if they refuse to repent. While many Christians find such practices outdated, pastors in large and small churches across the country are expelling members for offenses ranging from adultery and theft to gossiping, skipping service and criticizing church leaders.
The revival is part of a broader movement to restore churches to their traditional role as moral enforcers, Christian leaders say. Some say that contemporary churches have grown soft on sinners, citing the rise of suburban megachurches where pastors preach self-affirming messages rather than focusing on sin and redemption. Others point to a passage in the gospel of Matthew that says unrepentant sinners must be shunned.
Watermark Community Church, a nondenominational church in Dallas that draws 4,000 people to services, requires members to sign a form stating they will submit to the "care and correction" of church elders. Last week, the pastor of a 6,000-member megachurch in Nashville, Tenn., threatened to expel 74 members for gossiping and causing disharmony unless they repented. The congregants had sued the pastor for access to the church's financial records.
First Baptist Church of Muscle Shoals, Ala., a 1,000-member congregation, expels five to seven members a year for "blatant, undeniable patterns of willful sin," which have included adultery, drunkenness and refusal to honor church elders. About 400 people have left the church over the years for what they view as an overly harsh persecution of sinners, Pastor Jeff Noblit says.
The process can be messy, says Al Jackson, pastor of Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn, Ala., which began disciplining members in the 1990s. Once, when the congregation voted out an adulterer who refused to repent, an older woman was confused and thought the church had voted to send the man to hell.
Amy Hitt, 43, a mortgage officer in Amissville, Va., was voted out of her Baptist congregation in 2004 for gossiping about her pastor's plans to buy a bigger house. Her ouster was especially hard on her twin sons, now 12 years old, who had made friends in the church, she says. "Some people have looked past it, but then there are others who haven't," says Ms. Hitt, who believes the episode cost her a seat on the school board last year; she lost by 42 votes.
Scholars estimate that 10% to 15% of Protestant evangelical churches practice church discipline -- about 14,000 to 21,000 U.S. congregations in total. Increasingly, clashes within churches are spilling into communities, splitting congregations and occasionally landing church leaders in court after congregants, who believed they were confessing in private, were publicly shamed.
In the past decade, more than two dozen lawsuits related to church discipline have been filed as congregants sue pastors for defamation, negligent counseling and emotional injury, according to the Religion Case Reporter, a legal-research database. Peggy Penley, a Fort Worth, Texas, woman whose pastor revealed her extramarital affair to the congregation after she confessed it in confidence, waged a six-year battle against the pastor, charging him with negligence. Last summer, the Texas Supreme Court dismissed her suit, ruling that the pastor was exercising his religious beliefs by publicizing the affair.

This is the 21st Century, and we need to change with the times. Instead of bringing back the outdated practice of shunning, I think we need to embrace to modern and dynamic practic of stunning. A quick taser blast would have sorted that uppity 71-year-old harlot out good.
O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.
God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

That's what I was think Brother. All I need would be the nod from Pastor Zeke and some skanky false Christian like that Caskey harlot would be treaded to some quality night stick time behind the church.
There is a reason why we don't get lawsuits at Landover.

I have a great idea, I will volunteer to head up a "Shunning Volunteer Group".
Each week the Senior Pastors could give me a (hit) list and my committee and I will carry out punishments before the next service.
I'm hoping this volunteer service will help LBC realize how sincere I am in wanting to become a member, and I will do all that is asked (no questions asked) for the LBC.

Oh Pastor Zeke, I really am sorry about the biscuits I provided last Sunday for morning tea. I didn't realise you were mildly allergic to walnuts.
However, I must admit, I'm all for this. If sinners won't repent and follow the word of the Lord, which their pastors have shown them, why should they be allowed to sully the congregation with their wickedness?
"She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day" - Luke 2:36-37

Indeed this is welcome news, Pastor Ezekiel. The actual word "shun" is seldom used in the Bible, but in practical terms the practice of shunning the backslider, sinner, and wolf among the flock is indeed scriptural. For instance, the man who kisses strange women is abhorrent:
The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein. Proverbs 22:14
Certain people must be cast forth from the church, for we must not sit with the wicked.
I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked. Psalm 26:5
The man who dabbles in perversity is to be despised. And how can a despised man enter the congregation of the Lord?
A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised. Proverbs 12:8
This practice of shunning is indeed Biblical.

Clearly this aged Karolyn Caskey harridan was making profane and vain babblings:
2Tm:2:16: But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
PS
If there’s anyone out there who knows, does the word “Shun” come from the contraction of Abishag’s tribe?
1Ki:2:17: And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.

I am surprised. I never knew shunning went out of popularity. I guess I am just an old traditional family values kind of man.
I am confused though as far as I knew, the Bible never told us not to shun those that go against His Majestic Word. Had someone received an update?
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Matthew 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Matthew 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

I CORINTHIANS 5
1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

Huh? Is that part of your church? What on earth does it mean? Why would god want you to do that so that you could be saved?
None of this makes sense to me. And since it does not make sense why should I join a church? And if you are in a church, and that's how you get saved, why not just leave? What do you gain there?
Or does it mean to kill such a one? If this is your god, tell me what it means.

It does not make sense to you because you have the heart of a heathen. Your body is alive, your mind is active, but your soul is quiet, it is asleep. Perhaps it is even in a state of coma. In any case, it will wake up and suffer when you are judged. And you will be judged (2 Corinthians 5:10). And when you are found to be unclean in the eyes of the LORD, you will be cast into Hell with the demons. Wouldn't you rather suffer a little in the flesh today to avoid suffering for eternity tomorrow?
Hello, my name is Mary. I hope to fellowship with you! Rev 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Would you like me to be cold, warm or hot? Think of a morgue. The quiet souls are cold. God likes them. The ones who work there get the big thumbs down. They are warm. Next door is a nice hot place and souls in there get cooked. Burnt. Fried. God likes the first and third types. If the book does not make sense, to me, am I hot or cold? And if my flesh is burned, then will my soul be saved?
But for now, I can't see the sense in what you claim which would seem to make me, or my soul as you say, both hot and cold at the same time. Have I got that right?
In which case we'll both wind up at the same place, in the end. Sounds like the best of both worlds.
Proverbs 20:23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
