Default Day 75. Judges 16-18 - 11-18-2007, 05:06 PM

Judges 16-18

Today we get:
  • The end of Samson
  • Micah
  • Dan

Judges 16

1 Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.

You don't normally hear about men of God going in unto harlot's these days, and when you do, it's always something bad, like Jim Bakker, or Jimmy Swaggart, these men were just following a sound biblical Old Testament example, laid forth by Samson.

2 And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.

See, when you do the LORD's work, people want to kill you. That's why the recent DDoS attack, just goes to prove that what we are doing is good.

3 And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron.

The man took the fence, and the posts and carried them to the top of a hill! PRAISE JESUS!!!

4 And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.

Delilah, why do the men always fall in with the wrong women?

5 And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.

So she asks him.

6 And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.

He says if you tie him with 7 green vines, he will have no strength. So she does. Then she says "Samson, the philistines are here" and he breaks the vines.

Then she asks again, and he says, new ropes... that'll do it.

Again, he breaks the ropes.

Then she asks again, and he says, if you braid his hair, that'll do it.

Again, it doesn't.

Man, he likes riddles. And he has a tendency to hook up with women who cause him trouble.

Finally, he got tired of her bitching, (it only took like 7 days from his first wife), and he decides to tell her.

17 That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

She tells the philistines that she knows the secret now.

19 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

As soon as his hair was cut, not only did his strength leave, but the LORD also left him.

21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.

He became a blind, bald, weakling.

23 Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.

Perhaps, if we are lucky, we can get Brother Prune to expound on Dagon.

25 And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars.

Samson asked the guy binding him, to let him feel and lean on the pillars.

27 Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.

We aren't told how he was entertaining them. They probably just threw cigarette butts and fruit at him.

28 And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.

He was angry about being blind. Understandably. Now exactly why they decided the best way to first torture him would be to pluck out his eyes, that's a mystery.

29 And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.

30 And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.

PRAISE JESUS!!!

So, his total is somewhere over 4000 philistines. Praise JESUS!!!

Then his family came and got his remains and buried him by his father.

Judges 17.

1 And there was a man of mount Ephraim, whose name was Micah.

Micah isn't a judge.

His mom somehow got 1,100 pieces of silver. Which her son takes and builds and idol a teraphim and an ephod. He then makes one of his sons his priest.

One day a levite was walking around, and Micah hires him to be his priest, instead of his son.

12 And Micah consecrated the Levite; and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah.

13 Then said Micah, Now know I that the LORD will do me good, seeing I have a Levite to my priest.

For a while, they lived happily ever after.

Judges 18

1 In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

The Danites may have been displaced by philistines.

So Dan sent out 5 guys to spy land for them to conquer/take.

3 When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

They probably recognized his accent, or he actually talked like a priest instead of being a guy who fumbled his way through priestly talkings.

They asked him to bless them.

6 And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.

They then found a place to move to. So they go back and get the rest of their people to go kick out the people who pre-stole the land.

11 And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.

They stopped by Micah's again.

17 And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.

The priest decided to go with them, because he thought it better to be the head priest for a whole tribe, as opposed to just being the priest for one guys family. Is this the first example of a preacher leaving a small flock to go and have a super-church?

Micah chases after them.

24 And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?

The Danites told him to shut up, because some peope in their tribe might not like to hear his bitching and might kill him. When Micah saw they were too strong for him, he left.

27 And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.

Praise Jesus, they conquered a group who was peaceful!

29 And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

30 And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.

31 And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

Now what is interesting is that these people were carrying an idol dedicated to God. But we know that God hates idols.

So what have we learned today?

1. If you are a Nazarite, don't ever stop speaking in riddles, you'll probably go blind.
2. Dan slaughtered an unmilitarized people to found their area.
3. The levite, like most modern preachers, went with the best offer/highest bidder. How many preachers today will skip the ENTIRE Old Testament, because it doesn't put butts in pews?
