For those who worship an absent Redeemer maybe a symbol is needed to remind them. The cross on which Christ died was quite real and as such covered by the prohibition in Exodus:
Exodus 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Whether engraved or carved or cast or forged is covered by
any likeness of and the object itself is covered by
any thing. A representation of the four seasons is not an object and papists would probably raise that objection. The answer is equally simple, right there in the next verse:
Exodus 20:5a Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.
Again the papist will say that verse 5 applied only to the images referred to in verse 4. Abstract concepts are not covered there. It's amazing how far heretics will go to justify their denial of God and no exegesis is required to demonstrate Romish deception. Just read. It's there in print for all to see. The language is unambiguous:
Leviticus 26:1 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.
THINGS YOU CAN'T MAKE
1 idols
2 graven image (whether an "idol" or not)
3 standing image (anything not covered by 1 & 2)
4 any image of stone
THINGS YOU CAN'T DO
5 bow down to item 1
6 bow down to items covered in 2
7 bow down to a standing image
8 bow down to any image of stone
God is very consistent. Prohibitions 1 & 2 clearly cover images of abstract concepts, just in case The Ten Commandments weren't explicit enough and there are additional prohibitions against "molten" images for those who thought "
any" didn't include casting.
Just to be clear that any image in any catholic setting is prohibited by God whatever they call it and whether it's of an abstract concept or an actual object from history.
Has anyone mentioned locusts yet?
Mark 1:6
6a John was clothed with camel's hair
6b and with a girdle of a skin about his loins
6c and he did eat locusts
6d and wild honey.
