Default Bible Study: Romans 11:31-32 - 03-14-2009, 03:53 AM

Hello,

Background: Bible study before work with co-workers on Friday mornings from 7:00-7:35am. I have recently started reading the Bible for the first time and am trying to gather cohesive thoughts from it.

Story: Last week, a co-worker (one not attending the Bible study) happened to see me and a friend with my Bible returning from the Bible study. He asked what book I had, probably because it was fairly thick and he is an English teacher. I told him it was my Bible and he asked me if he could see it. I gave it to him and he looked it over and opened to Romans 11:31-32.

Here is Romans 11:31-32 from BibleGateway

Romans 11:31-32 (King James Version)

31Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. 32For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

He said that this was the only part of the Bible we needed to know. We told him that one cannot take a part of the Bible and use It to justify ones own system of beliefs. He then said, "How can you refute what I have said? You believe that the Bible is the truth right? The Bible even says everything written is the truth right?" I unfortunately could not think of something to say, but my friend said, "You now have used another part of the Bible to support your first statement about Romans 11:31-32, so you contradict yourself." The co-worker then had no ground to stand on and claimed he did not understand what my friend just said. What is to be grasped from Romans 11:31-32?
My thoughts are that God is merciful and willing to forgive us for our sins as imperfect human beings when we truely repent. Any feedback would be appreciated.
