Default Day 17. Exodus 1-3 - 09-21-2007, 03:52 PM

Exodus 1-3
  • Israel's children propagate
  • Egyptians put them into bondage
  • Killing of the males
  • MOSES
  • Moses talks to God

Exodus 1

1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.

2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

Dinah went with them too. I wonder, did Dinah ever marry/re-marry?

6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

Well, they were kind of old.

7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

There are few things in this world that are worse than an infestation of Joos.

Well, there became a new king of Egypt. He didn't know Joseph, and didn't like having all those Hebes running around there. In fact there were more Hebrews in Egypt than Egyptians.

9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

So Pharaoh appointed bosses over the Hebrews. Which turned the hebes from being shepherds to builders.

11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

Well, the more the Egyptians oppressed the Hebrews, the more they multiplied.

So Pharaoh tells the midwives that they have to kill the boy babies and let the girls live. The midwives don't do it.

Pharaoh calls them in and asks why they didn't do it.

19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

They claim the women give birth before they can do their job.

So Pharaoh makes a decree to the people, instead of the midwives.

22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.

Remind you of anything?

Matthew 2: 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

It seems that roughly every 2150 years (for some ODD reason) there's a birth of someone who will/should lead the people of Israel, and that whoever is the major king of them at the time orders for young boys to be killed. Must be something in the water, or the stars.

Exodus 2

1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.

2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.

I wonder who it could be?

3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink.

This is the second ark mentioned in the Bible (kjv1611) The first was Noah's.

Now, you may have heard the joke "How many animals did Moses take on the ark?"

Normally people don't think when they answer, and say 2 of each kind (but they leave out the 7 of the clean). Then the person who asked the question normally says "wrong dummybutt, moses didn't have an ark". Well, that's also wrong, because Moses DID have an ark, in Exodus 2:3. (He also called for the building of the ark of the covenant, but that's still a couple of days away.)

Back to the history lesson.

Pharaoh's daughter was down by the river taking a bath (or something) with some of her handmaids, and one of them sees the ark and brings it over to the daughter, they open it, Moses cries, the daughter has compassion, and decides to keep the Hebrew baby and raise it as her own. They decide to call one of the Hebrew women who recently gave birth to nurse Moses, and as luck would have it, they hired Moses mother to be his wet nurse (although technically she wouldn't be a wet nurse because the child was her own).

9 And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the women took the child, and nursed it.

Leave it to a Jew to get paid to do something they would have done for free anyway!

11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.

He looked around, didn't see anyone important, and then killed the Egyptian and buried him in the sand. The next day he goes out and sees two Hebrews fighting, and he stops to ask them why?

14 And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.

Well, Pharaoh finds out and intends to kill Moses, so Moses flees to the desert.

While there, he meets the priest of Midian, who has 7 daughters. He later gives Moses his daughter Zipporah to be Moses' wife.

She gives birth to Moses first son, Gershom.

Later, the king of Egypt dies, the children of Israel cry to God.

24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

25 And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.

God said "oh yeah... forgot about that."

Exodus 3.

Moses was tending the flock of his father in law, when he turns and sees a burning bush.

2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

Who wouldn't stop to look at a bush that's on fire, but not being consumed by the flame?

4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

So God was just kind of hanging out as the burning bush.

He introduces Himself to Moses.

6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

Then he tells Moses his master plan to take his people out of bondage, and deliver them back to the land of Canaan.

Moses, says, "Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh?"

God says, he'll be with Moses.

So Moses balks again, "Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?"

God tells him the Popeye story.

14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Although Popeye said "i yam what i yam"

19 And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.

I wonder what he'll do?

20 And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.

God promises that the Egyptians will WANT the Hebrews to leave so bad, that they will give up their jewels and clothes just so the trip will be more comfortable.

22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.

So what have we learned?

1. Again, we are told the children of Jacob/Israel.

2. The Hebrews are pressed into slavery because they outnumbered and were mightier than the Egyptians.

3. Moses was put in an ark (with no animals)

4. He was raised as an Egyptian.

5. He murdered an Egyptian.

6. He was sent to the desert.

7. He got married to Zipporah and had a son Gershom.

8. God chose a murderer to lead His people from Egypt.

PRAISE JESUS

Brother V, I must comment that this is a wonderful syllabus which must be incorporated into 30 second commercials and taught in science class in all public schools. I enjoy it immensely!

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it--for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

God being truth, justice, goodness, beauty, power, and life, man is falsehood, iniquity, evil, ugliness, impotence, and death. God being master, man is the slave. Incapable of finding justice, truth, and eternal life by his own effort, he can attain them only through a divine revelation... he who desires to worship God must harbor no childish illusions about the matter, but bravely renounce his liberty and humanity.

In one facet, yes, they increase greatly. But, they are hoping to use their numbers to turn the European countries into Muslim countries, which the Jews didn't/couldn't do.

We find that out in a couple of days.

(here's a sneak peak)

Exodus 34:29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.

Moses face glowed on it's on.

Other translations have that instead of radiating light, that Moses grew horns. (We'll discuss that on Day 28)

This makes Moses the first action-hero. I'm picturing Moses as a Steven Seagal-like character, sneaking up behind the Egyptian, then grabbing his head and twisting all in one motion, snapping his neck.

Too bad whatever witty one-liner he must have said didn't get recorded.

Pastor Billy-Ruben, oh my, that sounds really intresting and cool! And yes too bad about the oneliner... but it was probably something very clever and manly!

Praise Jesus everyone!
