Is it OK to "Steal" My Neighbor's Wi-Fi Signal? -
10-18-2010, 08:02 AM
I get asked this question quite often these days, and I usually reply that if your neighbor had Obama campaign signs on his lawn, or a bumper sticker on their car it's obvious they are fine with sharing their wealth. We have all seen these "unsecured" Wi-Fi signals in our neighborhood, usually from people with Apple Mac computers (and Apple "Airport" Wi-Fi signals) - so they must be liebruls anyway.
The Bible (KJV1611) is pretty clear when it comes to stealing (Exodus 20:15), but most of the references to actually "stealing" anything involve things like cattle, oxen, donkeys and sheep (Exodus 22:1, 4, 7, 9, etc.). God also instructs us not to graze our livestock in our neighbor's field or vineyard (Exodus 22:5), and the Ten Commandments also talk about the thought crimes of "coveting" our neighbor's wives and goods.
One of the things that is clear is that these Wi-Fi signals are not anything like sheep or goats. The "scientists" tell us they are more like "light", it's just that we can't see it with our eyes. If my neighbor leaves his porch light on and some of the light spills on my property, he has no right to ask me to pay for the light that lands on my yard.
Secular law holds that a portion of a neighbor's tree that encroaches on my property belongs to me, and all the fruit and nuts from said tree are mine as well. Could the same be said for a Wi-Fi signal that happens to land on my property?
Now someone is likely to say that "surfing" on my neighbor's Wi-Fi signal is the same as my sheep "grazing" on his land, but I would point out that at the end of the day my neighbor is not bereft of any less Wi-Fi signal - unlike the example in Exodus (22:5) where he has some missing grass.

brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.
...and get off my lawn

An interesting question... I've always thought of it like this. I certainly wouldn't break into my neighbor's house and take food out of their fridge, but if my neighbor broke into my house and left food in my fridge I wouldn't have a problem eating it (after its been tested for the AIDs, of course). If they really didn't want you using it, why are they putting it all over your property?

Those are Godly points, brother WJB.
Personally, I have been told that those signals are very bad for your health. That's why I have put tinfoil around my house, finished with leaded paint, effectively blocking all demonic radiation from my neighbours.
Further more, I keep working with my trusted 14.4K modem to visit our Heavenly forums. I love the screeching sounds it makes when connecting, and I actually hear similar noises when I'm praying, knowing that I'm fully synced with God that way.
Still, I do have a question though: is it OK to download graven images of sheep? I love watching sheep, they remind me of Jesus' flock. But if I understand Exodus 20:4 correctly, I shouldn't. So I guess my question is: are jpegs to be considered graven images?

If your neighbor is using Wi-Fi, and is transmitting to your property, how can it be stealing. You neighbor has taken the effort to ensure the signal is available in your house and ensuring their is no security. Think of the Wi-Fi as gift.
27.Proverbs 15:27 He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.
28.Proverbs 17:8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
Psalm 68:18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth
Proverbs 19:25 Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.
Ezekiel 16:14 And thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord GOD.
Proverbs 6:25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
Genesis 24:16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
Song of Solomon 1:15 Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes.

It is quite the conundrum Brother, or is it!
Obviously if your neighbor was an atheist, they wouldn't believe the WiFi signal exists anyway, (seeing it is not visible to their sight). They use that excuse as to God too!
As such, who are they to claim that something they don't believe exists is being stolen from them ?

I don't see how it can be considered theft. Wi-Fi are radio waves and if your neighbor broadcasted a radio station out of his home, how could it be "stealing" if you listened to his station? Plus, how could you own "radio waves" anyways, from a philosophical and legal point of view? And finally, if they don't want their Wi-Fi signals to be used by other people, then don't transmit them to your neighbors!
Personally, I don't have Wi-Fi. The contracter who installed my internet connection tried to push it on me, but it sounded like a scam. In fact, the whole computer industry is one big money-making scam, just like how they try to make you buy a new one every couple years. I've had my Pentium with state-of-the-art CD-ROM drive and 56k modem and AOL connection for the last 15 years and I'm happy with it. I've invested thousands of dollars in repairs over the years and the Geek Squad guys always tell me to just buy a new one (again with the scam!) but I'm no dummy. I don't fall for it.

As you are a person of some technical knowledge in the Christian world, I accept your precautions as valid. As these "rays" are dangerous, I'm sure I could sue the neighbor. The amount for which I would sue him would be exactly equal to the amount that he thinks his "rays" are worth. So, here is and equitable solution: drill a hole big enough for the right amount of "rays" to get through, and everyone's happy.

Rest happily here; to be graven, it has to be carved, .jpg images are formed in much the same way that your eye forms an image of God's Creation - so no worries there!

Instead of worrying about stealing something that your neighbor is willfully handing over to you, you should consider contacting your lawyer and suing for assault.
May you be a blessing to every life you touch.

My view is that if something comes across my property line, be it a tree branch, a piece of fencing, a child's thrown ball, a wi-fi signal, or Mormons ringing my doorbell, it's mine to do with as I please.

I'm not sure why they call it "stealing" you're not exactly stealing Wi-Fi, if anything, you're piggybacking onto it.
If your neighbor pays for someone to trim your adjoining hedge, did you steal the hedge trimming?
As LordHaveMercy pointed out, if they had an apple tree, any apples that grew on a branch over your property line are considered yours by law. You can even hack that branch off if you so desire. So why wouldn't it be the same with energy waves?

OK so the wifi bit was an edit, but let us look at what your special book says in the rest of the verse that WWJDnow was referring to:
Deuteronomy 5:21
Quote:
Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbours wife, neither shalt thou couet thy neighbours house, his field, or his man seruant, or his maide seruant, his oxe, or his asse, or any thing that is thy neighbours.

That is the debate, I was just showing that your special book in Deuteronomy 5:21 covers wifi as much as it does a house, field, or man seruant etc.

So if my neighbor builds his house on my property? plows a field on my property? Sends his man servant to do work on my property?
Perhaps if the Wifi could only be used by one person at a time, it could be considered stealing, but your neighbor could be online and not even notice you. Unless of course you decide to pirate a bunch of videos or something.

Brother, I'm not sure there's any coveting going on here.
All that's happening is using what, as Brother WJB has so interestingly pointed out, is something the neighbor is carelessly strewing across my church's property anyway.
There is one potential glitch: If your neighbor is involved in any illicit activities (making bomb threats against abortion clinics and gay "community" centers; downloading pornography; writing scores of letters to a True Christian™ lady like Sister Talitha begging for discipline, in violation of a restraining order), you could get blamed for them!
Bible boring? Nonsense!

I thought I was pretty clear in my initial post in anticipating the potential God mockers that might come around here and try to undermine the Bible (KJV1611). "Coveting" is a thought crime against God, it says nothing about actually doing anything about it.
Quote:
Covet -
1. to desire wrongfully, inordinately, or without due regard for the rights of others: to covet another's property.
2. to wish for, esp. eagerly: He won the prize they all coveted.
3. to have an inordinate or wrongful desire.
|
If my neighbor refuses to erect a fence on his property and I happen to observe his scantily clad harlot wife sunbathing in the back yard I better not even think about the idea of planting my seed in her as that would be a sin. If, however, she wanders over to my property and begs me to put some seed in her it is an entirely different matter.
A Wi-Fi signal is an example of the latter, as it simply wanders on to my property.
Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.
...and get off my lawn
