It may be technically incorrect to give the Lord personal responsibility for this - He doesn't so much drown them as neglect to save them. This is perfectly reasonable, given that they are unSaved. If the Mexicans are too lazy to teach their children how to swim, they can hardly expect God to intervene on their behalf! He could rescue them if He chose to do so, but why would He?
Please correct me if I'm wrong (geography is not my strong point), but I don't think Mexico is a landlocked country, is it? So there is plenty of sea for them to practice in and frankly this is just poor parenting. We live on the small island of Britain and my 3 eldest boys (Luke is 11 and the twins are 9) swim at least 10 miles a day. With the tide in their favor (and God on their side
), then if by some awful misadventure they ever got stranded in France, they could swim the 20 miles home. And even young Mark, just 5, could cross a small river like the ludicrously-named
Rio Grande without making such a fuss.
As for the savages in the Mediterranean, they are just dumb. If you can't swim then take a plane, not a leaky boat.
