Shoes Made From Whale Foreskin

A renowned designer who has been awarded a grant from the Aurora Design Fund once made a pair of shoes from the sheaths of minke whale penises.

Aurora will this year award some 17.5 million ISK to numerous designers, among them Sruli Recht, who has worked with celebrities such as Karl Lagerfeld, Lenny Kravitz, Rufus Wainwraight and Kanye West. Last summer, he used the penises of minke whales (warning: graphic images) to create shoes by skinning them of their sheaths, tanning them, and then cutting them to a pattern to be sewn together.

As Sruli explains on his website: "These Minke whale dorks are the by-product of the indigenous Icelandic communities tribal hunting for daily food sources. In other words, each whale here was hunted by ‘Icelanders’ purely as a necessity for food." Whether Sruli is joking or unaware that Icelanders eat very little whale (pre-2008, Icelanders who ate whale once a month comprised less than 3% of the population. Today, it's about 5%) is unclear.

Sruli says that he likes to use materials that are normally discarded, and this year, intends to make clothing out of spider's web.
