My name is Dolores de Barriga. I am a graduate student of history of religions at the University of Chicago, and I come here to respectfully learn about your faith. I am originally from Spain, we moved to the US with my husband, Juan Barriga, seeking the American Dream - as you might know, the economical situation is Spain is pretty bad.

I am Catholic, I grew up in a Catholic family, so I've came to know Jesus since my early childhood. I attend St. Ita Catholic church in Chicago, and my favorite Bible verse is John 3:16.

Since I've been studying history of religions I've been shaken up in my faith, seeing the diversity of beliefs around the world, so I have two purposes coming to this forum: learn about your beliefs and hopefully also strenghten my own faith.

First of all, welcome to these friendly forums. I can tell you were raised Catholic and studied the history of religion. However, I want to let you know that the Catholics are wrong, since the Catholic Church, cherry-picks parts of the Bible. For example, do you obey EVERY command of the Lord, including the ones in Leviticus? I don't think so. So, the first step to becoming a daughter of the Lord is to obey the Bible (KJV 1611) from Page 1 all the way to the very end of Revelations.

Second, here's some friendly, sisterly advice here. I know in the Catholic Church, they let women speak, but here, women, are in subjegation to the men. That does not mean we cannot speak and have a voice, but it means that what the True Christian men say is final. We must obey. The verses I posted below explain that.

"But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." 1 Timothy 2:12
"But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman [is] the man; and the head of Christ [is] God." 1 Corinthians 11:3

"[To be] discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed." Titus 2:5
"For Adam was first formed, then Eve." 1 Timothy 2:13
"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also saith the law." 1 Corinthians 14:34
"Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that [is] unprofitable for you." Hebrews 13:17
"I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully." 1 Timothy 5:14

Dear, I do not mean to be hateful, for all I want is the best for your soul. I'm simply obeying, "This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;" which is found in Titus 1:13 and "If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified." 1 Peter 4:14.

Their Oriental Institute is filled to the brim with God mocking atheists who will twist your head with lies about the religion of Abraham being borrowed from the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Egyptians. Then they'll indoctrinate you with harebrained notions like the Hebrew were a minority Canaanite faction, the Song of Solomon is derived from Egyptian love poetry, the Biblical notion of duality being injected during the period of Babylonian rule, and the Biblical creation narrative is nothing more than a retelling of Babylonian and Sumerian creation myths. Mr. Des: yes, I admit that reading things like "Gilgamesh" and learning that it was older than the Bible was somewhat of a ahock for me; one of the reason why my faith isn't as strong as it used to be.

Mrs. Elizabeth: thank you for your long and informative post. I have to admit, though, that St. Paul's misogyny was another reason for my faith being shaken.

I do realize that the Catholic Church has been basing its teachings more on the tradition than the Bible, so your criticism is correct. I look forward to learning more about how the members of the Landover Baptist Church put the teachings of the Bible in practice!

I am so glad to see that you are questioning all the fallacies in the Catholic Faith. They are misogynistic, here at Landover, men are in control, but in this case, it's God-given control. Some of the things we discuss may shock you and appall your modern, feminine sensitivities, but the things we discuss are all Biblical, so to the Lord, they are acceptable. Also, just a friendly notice, I am not married yet. It's still Miss; my fiance has decided to wait for a while till we are married.

Faith Machine: while the Catholic church hasn't got the power to actually forbid reading the Bible (whichever version of it) anymore, they surely don't encourage it, either. Most people don't question the Church interpretation because they were enculturated that way. My history of religions studies made me question not only the Catholic interpretation of the Bible, but also Christianity as a whole.

This is what I struggle with, Pastor Peters. I do hope that my faith strenghtens as I get to know better this congregation.

It is with true and fervent prayer that I greet you. In the language of Spain, your name refers to pain and suffering. Most of the time, Spanish women spell their name Delores, but perhaps you were meant to suffer for Christ as a way of furthering His Kingdom. Only God knows. (But I'd find out if I were you.)

I asked Jesus to shove out any papist demons that may be trying to oppress/possess you. You see, I was a practitioner and a religious in the whore of babylon church, baptizing babies and worshipping St. Dymphna, the patroness of the mentally ill (I have a brother that isn't right in the head because of his umblicalilalist chord shutting off oxygen to his brain at birth and it took three doctors an hour to figure out the puzzle of how to get it unwrapped and they finally had to go to lunch and then figure it out when they got back). Now my brother kind of looks like this all the time: I imagine he will go to hell someday.

Well, as a cathylick (former) saved by the blood of Jesus, I can answer most questions related to the way Jesus really wants us to believe and the way the priests will tell you to believe so you can continue to support their parish.

One important thing I had to do to rid my home of the papist influences was to burn all of my statuary. I had a really sharp looking Peter and I had to take it out and really destroy it in the name of Jesus. Since Peter was a big influence on me, it hurt my heart to do this, but Jesus blessed me so much when I obeyed that still small voice. I still hear voices but I am sure they are the Holy Trinity.

The Lord wants you to come out. Revelation 18:4 tells us that we are to have no part in the foul and vile lies of pedophile priests and lesbian nuns with their seductive voices and attractive habits. Despite our fleshly urges to allow the priest to manipulate us because after all no one will ever find out, Larry, not unless you tell, Larry, it will be ok, Larry... but I digress. The truth isn't found in some scented rosary, it's found in the KJV 1611. I hope we can help you to learn more about the precious love and grace of Jesus.

Hope I may enter into the discussion. You acknowledged that church hasn't the power to actually forbid reading the Bible (whichever version). I'd like to point you to Luke 11:51 - "From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation."

Consider what Jesus is saying here. The OT canon was already completed in His time, and was divided into three sections (Law, Prophet, and Writings). And the order in which Jesus quotes, "from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zacharias" is the order in which the Jewish canon was ordered. The Apocrypha was already completed and circulating, and Jesus knew this, but neither He nor the Apostles mentioned the book. Just because Protestants reject the Apocrypha is not a reason in itself unless you know the verse for yourself, and "why." - Sola Scriptura.

Brother Larry: Thank you for your friendly welcome. I believe that "Delores" is the English spelling of my name, however, in Spanish it is usually spelled "Dolores." My parents told me that I was named after Spanish singer María Dolores Pradera.

Calvinist: I am pretty sure that I am the least qualified person to engage in discussions about the Bible. However, I know that the King James Bible as published in 1611 does contain the apocrypha, so I'm not sure what the problem here is?

I would view the Apocrypha as uninspired and extra-biblical reading. I would not place anymore emphasis on it than the acknowledgement Jude gave to the Book of Enoch, which he mentioned as it was a widely known and circulated.

1. Not one of them is in the Hebrew language, which was alone used by the inspired historians and poets of the Old Testament.
2. Not one of the writers lays any claim to inspiration.
3. These books were never acknowledged as sacred Scriptures by the Jewish Church, and therefore were never sanctioned by our Lord.
4. They were not allowed a place among the sacred books, during the first four centuries of the Christian Church.
5. They contain fabulous statements, and statements which contradict not only the canonical Scriptures, but themselves; as when, in the two Books of Maccabees, Antiochus Epiphanes is made to die three different deaths in as many different places.
6. It inculcates doctrines at variance with the Bible, such as prayers for the dead and sinless perfection.
7. It teaches immoral practices, such as lying, suicide, assassination and magical incantation.
