There is depth to it (the filling) because there has to be space down there for h*ll, and also when you're gardening you notice your trowel doesn't poke right through into nothingness. So there is stuff down there, no doubt about it.

And the surface is bumpy like a lattice-top crust, or streusel-topping (though naturally much bigger of course), which is why you will see the mast of a ship first come over what a viewer can take to be "the horizon", followed by the body of the boat.

Yes, I'm well aware the earth is flat. It has to be. Otherwise, a bullet fired into the air would fall back towards the earth and continue to follow the supposed curve all the way around it, perpetually falling, and never hitting the ground! Though I admit, I can see how it's confusing to some. When you're up high enough, it does look curved, but it's probably the same optical illusion that's created by drawing two really long parallel lines in sand. When you get far enough away, it looks like they're touching, but if you walk back, you can see they're still separate.
