Default Advice needed for tattoo victims - 03-11-2009, 11:26 PM

An email we recieved:
Dear Pastor,

A recent experience has caused me to seek out information on how various Christian Churces perceive tattoos and therefore I found a post of yours I did find many such posts and informational writeups and found them, for the most part, supportive of the idea that the Bible prohibits tattooing based on Leviticus 19:28. I must say that the language seems quite clear to me. There are however a number of so called authorities that maintain that since the tattoo prohibition is contained in the Old Testament that it no longer applies, or that the Leviticus reference refers only to those tattoos which are in reference to the dead. Certainly I did read your writeup about all this, and have mentioned these points simply to support the idea that I had. At any rate, I certainly hope you can offer me some advice about these matters and a situation which has come up betewwn my wife and I in the last few days. I was on a trip to South America recently ( Venezuela actually ) visiting some friends there and while talking to my wife on one occasion she mentioned that she was thinking of getting a tattoo. She also asked me what I thought of the matter.

My reply was that I myself had thought of getting one on a number of occasions but each time had decided against it for many reasons. I also mentioned that tattoos bring a great social stigma and that most people in society consider a tattoo to be a sign of a gang member, narcotics user, criminal, social outcast, etc. I also pointed out that she as an individual could certainly do whatever she chose though and cautioned her to think seriously about what I had said. My wife is a Christian of what some might term the holy roller variety ( Free Will Baptist ), and I fully believed that since she fancies herself to be an authority on the Bible that she would make the correct choice. I myself am a Christian, not of the holy roller variety, and do not regularly attend services because I have found all too many false prophets behind the pulpit in my almost 62 years. Imagine my surprise when I discovered upon returning to the US that she had indeed had a tattoo placed on her upper left bicept. It is about three to four inches high and about two to two and a half inches wide.

The image is that of a slightly stylized cross with words such as Jesus, Love, God, etc. at the points. After what amounted to a huge argument with her when I made the remark "I am very disappointed". I was accused of many failings including not letting her be herself, trying to control her, and other such things. I was also accused of not being sensitive to her feelings when I said "I am very disappointed". Other than my short remark I said little, if anything at all, other than to make some logical defenses of my own feelings and remark. The next morning after she had had some time to reflect, I asked her a simple question. "What does the Bible have to say about tattoos?" In response, she looked puzzled for a couple seconds while she thought and then replied "absolutely nothing whatever: it doesn't speak of it at all."

My response of course was to suggest that it could be a good idea to take a look at Leviticus and see if that were really true. When the relevant passage was pointed out she actually looked panic stricken and then quite quickly covered that emotion. She then spent around forty-five minutes frantically searching and reading various websites until she found one that she felt could support her actions. This was one of those which seems to use the idea that tattoos are indeed approved by the Bible. This one used the premise that since the OT has been put away that therefore anything said in it was no longer important. Hmm... My response, as you might imagine, was "what about bestiality?" Is this therefore acceptable now? And what about prostituting your daughter? Her explanations were, by now becoming quite convoluted and lacking in support. Some more searching and reading took place until she found another website that supported tattoos slightly differently. This site took the position that tattoos that do not pertain to the dead are OK. Both of these websites by the way appear to be commercial sites extolling the virtues of tattoos, and justifying them Biblically so that they may more easily market the concept to people who are Christians. This behavior is, as you know, always the case where people attempt to use the Bible to support their own actions rather than using it for guidance. This behavior of using the Bible to justify actions rather than as guidance is one of several reasons that I have found all but two Pastors that I have known to be false prophets.

At present my wife and I have a long term houseguest who is a woman who is going through a bad divorce from her husband of many years. This individual is a wonderful friend and has been very supportive of my wife and I on a number of occasions including the death ouf our son last summer. She also, as fas as I have been told, has a number of tattoos although I never have seen one as apparently they are hidden under normal clothing. It is with this woman that that my dear wife permitted herself to be tattooed. They both got one and the woman also paid for the marks. There's the full story the like of which it uis sure have heard before. I truly hope that you can find time to respond with some advice on this matter regading our houseguest, my dear wife, and me. I realize that prayer is the answer to every matter, but a few words from you will be highly values.

The first thing that comes to mind is that this man is not giving his wife enough disciplne. She got a tattoo without explicit permission. He may need to begin a program of beatings to be sure similar acts not becoming to a True Chrisitan wife do not occur in the future.

If tattoos are indeed prohibted by the Bible I would suggest surgical removal with a subsequent skin graft. Tattoo removal processes designed to "hide" the tattoo mearly do just that, hide it. God knows it's still there so I suggest the more radical approach. Besides, the nasty scar will be a reminder to her.

Yours in Christ
Brother Lazarus

In the Beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth. Genesis 1.1. This scripture is the first verse of the Bible for a reason. It lays the foundation for the absolute truth found in God's Holy WORD, the Bible.

Let me get this straight. There is a tattooed woman living with him and his wife, his wife suddenly starts getting tattoos, and this other woman is paying for them. I don't think one has to be a rocket scientist to see what is going on here. The best this man can hope for is to get in on the action rather than lose his wife entirely.

Secular law might forbid bigamy, but the Bible doesn't. The Bible also doesn't forbid three-ways between one man and two women, as long as the two women aren't related to each other. My advice to this man is to confront his wife and find out if she and the other woman are open to this arrangement. I will be praying for him.

I will also be praying that my Doreen finds a younger tattooed friend who needs a place to stay.

Maybe it's time for my church to start a ministry for wayward twenty-somethings.

You have several problems:
  • A failure to communicate God’s Word clearly,
  • A wife who disobeyed you,
  • A tattooed wife,
  • A disruptive female guest of dubious character.
You are quite right in the Biblical interpretation of tattoos – one, the Highest level; it should not be done, as God commands otherwise, and two the less important mark of the social outcast.

Your failure here was
Quote:
I also pointed out that she as an individual could certainly do whatever she chose though and cautioned her to think seriously about what I had said.
1Co:11:3: But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

Thus we see that your failure to act as Christ to your wife and give her a choice or "to consider", instead of a decision and explicit guidance, is the sin here. Your wife is now carrying an ungodly mark upon her.

Le:19:28: Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

As you point out, some may say the prohibition on tattoos is for the dead; God does not say this – your wife’s tattoo is of Christ. In any event, Christ is not dead.

A tattoo of a religious subject can only be described as an iniquity – in secular terms, it is the equivalent of writing, “No Shit Here” in excrement on an operating theater wall.

Now we come to your being beset by a tattooed female visitor. I can see this as nothing short of God’s judgment - this lady has arrived to teach you a lesson and by way of retribution for your earlier failure of discipline. Despite anything she has done in the past that appeared to be helpful, you must know in your heart that her purpose is not Holy.

Others may suggest taking this woman as a concubine; I am not at all certain that you have the character to provide an example for one woman, two are more than twice the trouble as they will conspire against you.

I suggest a Christian retreat and a life of ascetic deprivation and isolation for a month or so as you pray to the Lord for guidance.

In the meantime, I may find the time to visit and minister to the women in question and resolve the question of why your wife has such regard for the views of her ‘friend’ and so little for your views. So if you could supply the dates of your absence, I will see if I might fit it into a busy schedule.
