Default Day 226. Jeremiah 10-12 - 11-12-2009, 05:47 PM

Jeremiah 10-12

Jeremiah 10

1 Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

The remaining of the house of Israel, which is actually Judah.

2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

Do not be like the heathen. Who looks at the stars for signs and wonders (Genesis 1:14) the time for that has passed.

3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

Heathens cut a tree out of the forest...

4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

Heathens deck (decorate) it with silver and gold.

Remember this: Heathens take trees out of the forest, they fasten it in their houses, they decorate it with silver and gold. Let me say that again. HEATHENS TAKE TREES OUT OF THE FOREST, THEY FASTEN IT IN THEIR HOUSES, THEY DECORATE IT WITH SILVER AND GOLD.

The modern Christmas tree (and most Christmas practices) has origins with Germanic pagan practices. Some of the other practices that are pagan are: the Christmas ham; yule log; Santa Claus, mistletoe.

Tree worship is somewhat druidic. Additionally tree worship was common in the area during Jeremiah's time.

Do you worship Jesus with pagan rituals? Think about that this time of year (it's November as I'm writing this). In yesterday's reading we saw God got pissed at the people for worshiping Him without a pure heart. We also saw Him get angry for having the temple be defiled during Ahaz's time. Is your church defiling God's temple with pagan rituals? Is your home defiling God with pagan rituals? God CHOSE the jews; he killed most of them. You chose God, you think he'll let you get away with it?

So you put up the tree because your kids made you feel guilty about not having one. I hope you enjoy hell because you couldn't manage to keep your kids from annoying you.

9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

Here we see other idols. Gold and silver. These are things that have been made by peoples hands.

10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

God is real. He isn't a plate. He isn't a tree. He is the God that made everything.

15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

God doesn't get thrown out on the curb in the middle of January. God doesn't get put back into a box to wait until next year. God is eternal.

20 My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

Have you defiled your tabernacle?

25 Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.

Are you a heathen?

Jeremiah 11

God talks to Jeremiah, telling him to talk to the people of Judah.

3 And say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant,

What was that covenant again? It wasn't in Genesis 9, that was with Noah. It wasn't in Genesis 15/17 where God told Abram that he would multiply his seed, if he got circumcised. It was the Exodus 34/ Leviticus 26 covenant; follow the commandments, or God will kill you all (Leviticus 26:25)

God offered the people the land. They just had to worship him. As long as they worshiped him, they could stay. They have stopped.

8 Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do: but they did them not.

God can imagine all kinds of evil too.

11 Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.

God's gonna kick some ass.

14 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up a cry or prayer for them: for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble.

It seems that God kind of had a plan going into this conversation with Jeremiah. But the more he talked about how he was angry, the angrier he got. Now, he's telling Jeremiah that he isn't to pray for the people. His prayers will not be answered (or they will be with a "no") so Jeremiah shouldn't waste his time asking God to not do it.

15 What hath my beloved to do in mine house, seeing she hath wrought lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from thee? when thou doest evil, then thou rejoicest.

Back to the God as husband, Israel as wife analogy. Not only did Israel cheat on her husband, she did it in HIS house, in HIS bed! She didn't care that he was out at work, she was a filthy whore in HIS house.

At this point, Jeremiah promises to not pray for the people; and he mentions to God that the men of his hometown (Anathoth) want to kill him for his prophecies that are not necessarily positive. So God promises Jeremiah that he'll live, he also promises that they will be wiped out.

23 And there shall be no remnant of them: for I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation.

Which we see happened.

um...

Ezra 2:1 Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;

23 The men of Anathoth, an hundred twenty and eight.

So, God just sort of tricked Jeremiah into thinking that Anathothians would be completely wiped out, but 128 of them returned.

Jeremiah 12

1 Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?

Jeremiah is kind of whining like David here. This almost seems like a psalm instead of a book of prophecy.

God, why do the bad people have money? Why are my enemies in power? Why?

3 But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

God, please kill my enemies, like sheep for the slaughter. Psalm 44:22.

4 How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.

Jeremiah knows the destruction is coming, he's wondering how much longer till it gets there. As I read this chapter I was reminded of Brother Fred Phelps. I also thought about the street preachers that I saw in Asheville, North Carolina at the Bele Chere festival. People out telling the people that they are doing wrong, and the destruction of the LORD is coming. As they are preaching, people (even "christians") line up to mock them. Modern christianity has made God out to be some kind of moderate. Only the real TRUE CHRISTIANS ™ have the guts to stand up and tell people that what they are doing is against God's will. Others say, how do you know what god's will is? Just read the Bible (KJV1611) it's all in there. If you REALLY believe in God and want to worship him, then you should be on the side of Fred Phelps when he says that God hates fags. You should be on his side when he says God hates America. You should be on the side of the street preachers who condemn fags. You should be on their side, not just once a year, you should be there all the time, because they are on the right.

5 If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?

God tells Jeremiah that the worst for him is coming. You think it was bad before, that you JEREMIAH are persecuted now, just wait. You are tired from running with people? Wait till you have to run with horses!

6 For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.

You think there's a mob after you now? These people aren't that bad, what these people say is "FAIR WORDS". The worst is yet to come.

15 And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land.

Eventually, God will have compassion again. If/when the people start worshiping him again.

16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people.

The people are really into the Baal worship. God wants them to have the same devotion to Him, as they have to Baal. That is a sign of bad leadership. From my army days, I learned that leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish the mission, by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. If the mission here was for the people to worship God, and God was the leader, he is a horrible leader. He either didn't provide purpose, direction or motivation. The purpose seemed to be clear, however it wasn't good enough to get the people to actually follow. The direction was pretty straight forward. He told them how to do it, and it's actually quite easy. The motivation was lacking. Motivation is getting someone to WANT to do, what you know must be done. God definitely didn't motivate the people.

As a leader, you need to find out the thing that people love the most. For example, some people really love beer. To properly motivate a person, you need to get that person to want to do his job (mission) as much as he wants to do the other thing, like drink a beer. God wasn't able to get the people to love to worship Him as much as they loved to worship Baal.

17 But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.

Lack of leadership, is no reason to send your troops off on a suicide mission.

So what have we learned today?

1. God hates Christmas trees.

2. God formally ends another covenant, it was already broken by Israel/Judah, he is about to end his part of it too.

3. God's leadership isn't really that great.
