When the U.S. Mint moved the national motto to the edge of the $1 coin, officials claimed their decision would draw attention to the phrase "In God We Trust." Few observers agreed, and here at FRC, we voiced our concern that moving "In God We Trust" off the face of our coins was just one step toward removing it altogether. Eventually, Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kans.) sponsored a bill to restore the motto to its rightful prominence on the front or back of the coin. We are pleased to announce that President Bush signed Brownback's legislation into law last Wednesday as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008. Now that the President has taken a stand for the appearance of our money, perhaps he can turn his attention to how those dollars are being spent. This week, FRC, together with dozens of pro-life organizations, issued a letter to the White House asking the administration to reverse the Clinton-era regulations that allow Title X family planning funds to be used by abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood. Both Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush banned Title X recipients from combining family planning services with abortion services. One thing that most Americans agree on is that abortion is not a form of family planning. Unfortunately, that sentiment is not reflected in the current law, which allows abortion clinics to share the same waiting rooms, staff, and utilities with their affiliated Title X family planning clinics. With all that President Bush has done to support the dignity of life at every stage, we ask that he make the necessary changes to the Title X regulations and stop our hard-earned tax dollars from promoting and facilitating abortion.
