I do not remember mentioning anything about whether or not the earth is flat or not but obviously I belive that the earth is round.

Ok, I wasn't going to do this but what the heck, the earth is round, a sphere, here's some of the thousands of experiments you can
Do to prove it.
1) go up in a plane and look out a window, you'll see the curvature of the earth.
2) go 30 miles out to sea and look at the horizon, you'll notice that you don't see any land. Again because the earth surface is curved.
3) monitor the progress of the sun across the sky, this changes due to the earths axial tilt. You van measure the curve of the earth by measuring where the sun rises and sets. This may be too comlpex for you but it's how the ancient Egyptians did it
4) walk in one direction for long enough, you'll reach you're starting point eventually.
5) get some maps of antartica, you'll see that it isn't donut shaped.
6) download a satellite tracker from the net, this will show you the positions of satellite around the world

If you want to know why we don't "fall off at the bottom" then you have to ask yourself why we would. This fallacy is based on an assumption that there exists an "up" and "down" outside of the globe , there isn't, gravity is derived from mass and acts toward the center of an object, the center of the earth attracts the center of you. There is no up or down just a pull toward the center of a sphere. We put the north pole at the top of a globe as a convention, it could just as easily be seen from any angle.
Oh and we don't fly away when we jump because the atmosphere is spinning at the same speed, (in fact it does drag behind the earth slightly and thats why our weather systems go from west to east), we don't even notice the speed we are going at because it's constant. Try jumping up on a plane that's in flight, you'll see that you don't go shooting backwards down the length of the plane.

1) this is not an illusion, try doing a parachute jump, i dare you, you'll see the curve of the earth yourself

2) er why is there a limit to how far you can see? You can see stars and the moon can't you? These are further from the things just over the horizon. No there is no limit to how far you can see.

3) yes the sun appears to move across the sky, but at different angles depending on where you are on the earth

4) the ocean? Ever heard of a ship? We have those nowadays.

5) correct maps? I've never seen a map of the earth with antartica as a donut, cos it's not! It's a continent that's covered in ice, it's definatley not donut shaped.

6) you'll see on a satellite tracker the shape of the earth, and all the satellites orbiting it. You can even find gps satellites and if you have sat-nav look at which ones go overhead when and check this on your sat-nav

For the record air is not just a thin version of water, it's another state, I'm quite aware of the reflective index of water thank you very much and I know that light is bent in the atmosphere, but not anywhere near enough to make the ground look curved. How many times do you look into a stream and see the bottom all curving away? It doesn't happen in water so air has no chance given that just 10meters of water is equivalent to the entire atmosphere in density.

Also no one seems to be disputing my jumping on a plane experiment? Don't have an answer for that do you? Well you probably do but it'll be b0ll0cks.
