Another 40 reminded me of the defeat of Baal, worship of whom sounds worse every time it's mentioned.

There's a type of kissing "mwah . . mwah" that does not involve mouths. Pretentious? Sure! But it's done in the air by such as Hollywood actresses: they don't start eating faces. Elijah, thinking he was the only believer left, had gone into the desert to die under a juniper tree.

Elijah needed food because he had a long and gruelling journey to make. And the angel had provided special food, the single meal fuelling him for over a month trudging across the desert. It was also important because it resulted in his meeting Elisha, by whose hand many people would be slaughtered. Elisha was working with oxen when he inherited Elijah's mantle, connected together with wooden apparatus to pull things. He agreed to follow Elijah and boiled the oxen. Without them, the farmer wouldn't need the apparatus so that was incinerated. It may be that Mother Theresa—pictured in one of the circles of Hell—is less rational than an Ayatollah but that doesn't mean his forty days make sense. It's meretricious and it's hijacked and anyway, numbers were denounced centuries ago in their creed so I don't know why they still use them. Especially the number 40.
