The capital of The Netherlands is Amsterdam.
Denmark has never been known for wooden shoes.

This is a perfect example of the improper use of a parenthetical phrase. I assume that the poster meant this: "You live, so they say, in a backwards country: America." - another example of how proper use of punctuation can clarify what you write.

I always follow Occam's razor when writing these kinds of sentences. If there's an easier way to write it, it's probably better.

Writing: "You live in a backwards country." would have been sufficient, but the poster was too busy trying to sound intelligent and ended up looking the foo'.

I was informed earlier that I had mistaken Denmark for the Netherlands. It's not the same thing? I thought that's where all that Aesops fables stuff all came from.

Actually Denmark is the upper region of Holland whereas The Netherlands are the lower regions of Holland. Not much of a difference there.
