Brothers and Sisters, a man who made loud and far-ranging claims has died, and there are many in the Christian community who will mourn him.
James Dobson made serious social and fiscal bucks off of an organization called "Focus on the Family". Years ago, when I was hanging with the suspiciously hip crowd associated with Campus Life Youth For Christ, Mr. Dobson and his seminars were all the rage.
One point that Mr. Dobson was very firm on was that Christians were never to divorce and remarry under any circumstances. Even if their earlier marriages took place before they were Believers and their spouses refused to follow suit and follow Jesus, Dobson taught that those believers were still bound in those non-Christian marriages despite the fact that there are Bible verses stating that believers should not be yoked with non-believers.
Dobson even insisted that if a Christian's non-believing spouse initiated a divorce, re-married and produced children in clear demonstration that they had committed adultery, the abandoned Christian spouse could not remarry unless God killed their first partner.
My friends at Campus Life ate that stuff up. But is this position truly Biblical? And since when is someone like James Dobson, a man who only produced two children in his so-called "covenant marriage", allowed to judge a great man like Donald J. Trump who has clearly been blessed by the Almighty Himself and who has produced the requisite quiver of five children (even if it did take him three wives to do so)?
What about Kim Davis who stood alone and resolute against Gay marriage? She's been married more than once. Is Dobson saying that such a devout woman is more sinful than Pete Buttigieg who has never divorced his homer husband?
Brothers, I'm not the authority here to determine if James Dobson was actually right with the Lord before he died. I leave that in the prayerful hands of our pastoral staff. But I do have my concerns. We at
have a long and dedicated mission to preach, teach and follow the Bible precisely as it has been written. Dobson can co-opt slogans like "Focus on the Family" but we are focused on the Bible.
