  • Re: What is it like to be an atheist?

    I know this was intended as a joke, but it is in fact very realistic in many ways.

    Who Will Jesus Damn?

    Here is a partial list from just a few scripture verses:

    Hypocrites (Matthew 24:51), The Unforgiving (Mark 11:26), Homosexuals (Romans 1:26, 27), Fornicators (Romans 1:29), The Wicked (Romans 1:29), The Covetous (Romans 1:29), The Malicious (Romans 1:29), The Envious (Romans 1:29), Murderers (Romans 1:29), The Deceitful (Romans 1:29), Backbiters (Romans 1:30), Haters of God (Romans 1:30), The Despiteful (Romans 1:30), The Proud (Romans 1:30), Boasters (Romans 1:30), Inventors of evil (Romans 1:30), Disobedient to parents (Romans 1:30), Covenant breakers (Romans 1:31), The Unmerciful (Romans 1:31), The Implacable (Romans 1:31), The Unrighteous (1Corinthians 6:9), Idolaters (1Corinthians 6:9), Adulterers (1Corinthians 6:9), The Effeminate (1Corinthians 6:9), Thieves (1Corinthians 6:10), Drunkards (1Corinthians 6:10), Reviler (1Corinthians 6:10), Extortioners (1Corinthians 6:10), The Fearful (Revelation 21:8), The Unbelieving (Revelation 21:8), The Abominable (Revelation 21:8), Whoremongers (Revelation 21:8), Sorcerers (Revelation 21:8), All Liars (Revelation 21:8)

      Anyway, continuing from where I left off, another reason you might have floated to this particularly deluded branch of Christianity is because you fear death. You are uncomfortable not knowing what happens after you die. You use the bible to pretend you know even though, in reality, you don't have a clue. And you tell people they're going to Hell, just to make yourselves feel superior to them.

      Nobody has any clue what's going to happen when we die. The most likely scenario is that death is like everlasting deep sleep. Which is pretty peaceful to me.

      The heaven/hell scenario, though possible, is about as likely as turning into a fluffy bunny flying in space when you die.
      But our "fluffy bunny" scenario has the advantage of being the type of foolishness God says will confound the wise...

      "18For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.19For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe..."27But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty" (I Corinthians 1:18-21, 27)

      This means that the Bible fairytale you dismiss as untrue has been made true by God.

      You are hereby owned.

        The Bible (and Christianity in general) confounds me. What does that mean?

          Not only scientifically inept but also stupidly stubborn. Great.

          Old questions really. How do you know the Bible's true, how do you know God's real, etc etc.

          Other than that, it's useless to quote the Bible to me unless you want to continue proving how stupid it is. It's pretty much "I'm right, you're wrong", with fictional made up evidence.

          Made true by God? Thought you'd be saying it was already true. Guess not. Anyway, you still don't know. You can't know until you die. You can't know for sure that the bible and God are real/true.

          The fluffy bunny scenario does have a little less merit than heaven/hell, but only because it doesn't have a billion deluded souls supporting it.

            A couple of days ago, you claimed to be Buddhist, until you were shown that you don't actually agree with most of what Buddhism says, so you decided to be atheist. Now you believe in souls?!? How the heck does that work?

                Not most, some. And if you actually looked, I said "I agree with the logical parts of Buddha's teachings", never actually said I was Buddhist.
                Also said this instead of atheist because I'm an agnostic atheist but didn't know the word for it then.

                By souls, I meant people. I don't believe in souls. I'll stop using that word I guess. Cleared up now, yes?

                      Some of the fundamentals of the teachings attributed to Gautama Buddha are:
                      • The Four Noble Truths: that suffering is an ingrained part of existence; that the origin of suffering is craving for sensuality, acquisition of identity, and annihilation; that suffering can be ended; and that following the Noble Eightfold Path is the means to accomplish this;
                      • The Noble Eightfold Path: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration;
                      • Dependent origination: the mind creates suffering as a natural product of a complex process;
                      • Rejection of the infallibility of accepted scripture: Teachings should not be accepted unless they are borne out by our experience and are praised by the wise. See the Kalama Sutta for details;
                      • Anicca (Sanskrit: anitya): That all things that come to be have an end;
                      • Dukkha (Sanskrit: duḥkha): That nothing which comes to be is ultimately satisfying;
                      • Anattā (Sanskrit: anātman): That nothing in the realm of experience can really be said to be "I" or "mine";
                      • Nibbāna (Sanskrit: Nirvāna): It is possible for sentient beings to realize a dimension of awareness which is totally unconstructed and peaceful, and end all suffering due to the mind's interaction with the conditioned world.

                      You get to decide what is logical and what isn't. Try putting the Bible out of your mind for a second. Keep in mind this:

                      In Buddhism a type of freethought was advocated by Gautama Buddha, who challenged dogmas[7] and urged people not to follow anything due to mere tradition. Similarity of his teachings and freethought can be observed in the Kalama Sutta:
                      "It is proper for you, Kalamas [the people of the village of Kesaputta], to doubt, to be uncertain; uncertainty has arisen in you about what is doubtful. Come, Kalamas. Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing; nor upon tradition; nor upon rumor; nor upon what is in a scripture; nor upon surmise; nor upon an axiom; nor upon specious reasoning; nor upon a bias towards a notion that has been pondered over; nor upon another's seeming ability; nor upon the consideration, 'The monk is our teacher.' Kalamas, when you yourselves know: 'These things are bad; these things are blameable; these things are censured by the wise; undertaken and observed, these things lead to harm and ill, abandon them. "...Do not accept anything by mere tradition... Do not accept anything just because it accords with your scriptures... Do not accept anything merely because it agrees with your pre-conceived notions... But when you know for yourselves—these things are moral, these things are blameless, these things are praised by the wise, these things, when performed and undertaken, conduce to well-being and happiness—then do you live acting accordingly."

                            21:00 to 24:00 - Internet, talking to other satan lovers and stuff, viewing gay pornography
