  • Should Christians attend musicals?

A "musical" is a type of stage production. The actors sing.

Whether there is an actual plot, I have no idea. The very few I've seen string together opportunities for song & dance (they never just stand there and sing) so loosely that putative plot-lines get submerged beneath the least decorous dance routines—and the least imaginative—ever devised. Presumably the "plot" necessitates such lewd cavortings and so, I have to ask, are these things suitable entertainment for Christians?

I have an invitation and would like to know from the Pastors before accepting.

    Thank you.

I'm not a pastor, Sister Mitza, but I can make an observation. The Musical Jesus Christ, Superstar has the name of our Beloved in the title. Looking at a clip, however, makes me not so certain it qualifies as a church hymn. I would only say careful discernment is required.

Those are not costumes I would have designed. Ever.

Quite apart from the fabrics, general clingyness around the pelvis plus funky music leans closer to Rome getting bums-on-seats than anything to do with Jesus.

Other current musicals further that agenda, from the promo stuff out there, so even if my friend asks me to tag along I probably won't.

I cannot speak for our beloved Pastors, dear Sister Mitza, but I would advise against going to this "worldly entertainment" musical stuff. For one thing, we are commanded — as found within the blessed pages of the — to abstain from such things:

I John 2:15 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him."

And, in addition to that very important message from the , in this day and age, one is apt to find anything and everything in the entertainment industry: drag queens, screaming nigras, you name it — it's there!

No, Dear, goodness gracious; I think that it is best that you stay at home and concentrate on worthy pursuits, such as practising to attain exquisite penmanship!

I think my handwriting is sufficiently developed. When taught, we were obliged to use fountain pens: I won't describe the sanctions applied when I lost mine and could only find a green biro. It was French—a papist language—and I was failed outright. But perhaps it worked, as on another continent a year later I won the French prize yet remain ashamed to this day.

So far I've resisted those invites. The last "musical" I attended was an utter disgrace. Tickets for the front row were sold out so we sat one row back, in the middle, with a revolting view of the hindquarters of everyone in the front row wearing fancy costumes. "Minimalist" hardly does them justice. There was so much squirming and writhing I didn't know where to look and neither did my companion, who couldn't stop laughing given our view, even during the quiet numbers. Satan though has no off moments: for him its full steam ahead and even during lullabies, he wants everyone insane. This is nothing new:

Happily this "thing" I'm invited to is not in French. Even if I go (which I won't) at least I'd know there was something worse. But could there be a witnessing opportunity for Him even so? Christianity is the opposite of nihilism.
