Like many other Christians I enjoy watching a good sporting event, it can be good wholesome entertainment. In fact, one of my greatest pleasures is passing on my love of baseball to my three boys. However, I have always known that it is only a game and that the true meaning lies in the sportsmanship found within the match. Even when a team I support loses a big game I can accept the loss with humility and know that the other team simply played better that day. I may feel a bit down but I know that the Lord can heal my wounded heart and that there will be better times down the road.
Psalm 147:3 "He healeth the broken in heart, And bindeth up their wounds."
Now, I don't profess to know a great deal about ice hockey but I do know that it is bordering on being a religion in Canada (metaphorically, they are just really crazy about it). But, after reading about how the Vancouver Canucks were beat by an American team, the Boston Bruins, last night in the championship game I wonder if the people of Vancouver are of any religious nature whatsoever. Apparently they were pretty sore losers and instead of consoling each other or simply accepting that they lost they went on a alcohol fueled riot and destroyed their own city. Pretty sad really, and it says a lot for the type of people who live there. There is a (disturbing) video below (note that in the video some people from Seattle are amazed by the Canadian's behavior).
Proverbs 28:7 "Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: But he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father."
Romans 13:13 "Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying."
These Canuck fans will find themselves the ultimate losers when it is their soul that is on the line and not just some cheap trophy. Truly horrific behavior from a people who I thought were a bit more civil.
