Forgive my anger, brothers and sisters but I really have to vent about this. I have absolutely had it with being known as a "con artist" by gossip mongerers, backbiters, and snakes. It's not just a few people saying it either, it's several. No mainstream publication can reference me in an article without announcing me as "Fallen televangelist", "Shady con-man" or "Convicted felon."
Words hurt. I'm a man with a heart and feelings. Don't people think of how I feel before they lambast me with such hurtful sobriquets?
Here's a great example: There is a lady who has been watching my show and faithfully tithing a generous sum every month for the last four years. We'll call her Barbara. Well, some months back, the checks stopped flowing. I thought maybe she died because this was not like her.
I took the time out of my busy schedule and personally called her up on the phone. She was awe-struck by conversing with the Rev. Jim that she watches on TV daily and knows and loves. As it turns out, there was a lot of domestic turbulence happening. Her husband and her children demanded she stopped tithing. She said they referred to me as a "sleazy con-man" and a "scumbag that's only out for [her] money."
Well, I responded by quoting one of my favorite verses in all of the Bible:
Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
Essentially I explained to her that she was being tested by God to see if she was a True Christian(tm). By stopping her monthly donations, she was basically turning her back on Jesus by elevating the love of her family more than the love of God. Fortunately, I was able to let her see the error of her ways and she is back to donating her $1000 a month.
Finally, I will end it on this point: Yes, I may have been convicted of fraud, embezzlement, and tax evasion. Yes, I served several years in a federal penitentiary for those crimes. But, does that make me a con man? Consider a Catholic priest or a Lutheran minister. Maybe they've never fleeced their followers financially in the same degree as me, but they're the ones telling lies to people and getting them sent to Hell. I may have bilked my viewers out of their money, but I have never bilked them out of their souls! Everything I do, I do it to help people achieve Salvation through Jesus Christ. Another preacher might not take money from his followers, but spreads a perverted false Gospel.
Who is the real con man here?
