Day 346: Titus 1-3
Chapter 1
5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

Paul is sharing the Good News that God can be trusted because Scripture says He cannot lie (Titus 1:1-4; 1 Samuel 15:29).

7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

Pastors should be blameless before their congregation. Stubborn, irascible, drunken wife-beaters should not be considered for the position, but choose instead people who can speak smoothly and convince as many people as possible to join the church (Titus 1:6-9).

10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

Choose wisely because the world is full of unruly, smug, deceptive, money-grubbing charlatans, especially the Jews! They must be corrected, whatever it takes (Titus 1:10-14).

15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Non believers think theyíre so clever and good, but they are mistaken and cannot be trusted. The fact is, those who are not the servants of God are slaves of sin and Satan, even if they donít know it (cf, Psalms 14:1; Psalms 53:1).

Chapter 2
1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

Letís face it, when women get old, they become drunken old gossips if they donít know and heed the Gospel of Christ. Young women wonít know how to refrain from being whores or nags unless they have wise, older Christian women to show them their place is in the home. All men are dogs naturally, and are morally lost without Christ. This is why itís important to have a strong church influence in society (Titus 2:1-8).

9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;

Remind the servants in your community not to be uppity. When people see slaves, indentured servants, child laborers, or underpaid laborers, God doesnít want to be embarrassed (Titus 2:10).

15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Remember Christian pastors, you know best, youíre the boss. Donít let anyone forget that.

Chapter 3
1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

Christians should follow the law of the land and not get into trouble because they should recall what troublemakers they were before the grace of God changed them from uncouth, unsaved heathens into decent human beings who can look forward to the prize of immortality (Titus 3:2-7).

9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Repeating what Paul told Timothy, donít waste time with wild goose chases or unbelievers who are idiots. They condemn themselves to eternal damnation (Titus 3:10-11). You've got better things to do.
