These chemicals run their course to the Nero transmitters, which react to the chemical sending a message to the rest of the brain "Somethings up." The brain then reacts to the message, stopping production on dopamine, which is a chemical behind motivation and joy, along with serotonin and Oxycontin. The body is next to react, and this is different for everyone since then Monoamine levels increase and possibly adrenaline, which can cause anger and aggression. With all this happening, parts of the brain seem to slow or increase in activity. . Such as the Hypothalamus, which is the part of the brain responsible for appetite. Activity seems to decrease or increase here as a reaction to the overflow of chemicals being received, resulting in a loss of appetite or an increase in appetite. Without dopamine, the body starts to feel weak, without motivation, resulting a false tiredness. All this can be a result of receiving the news that a loved one has died. The brain is trying to process this, so that's why it can take up to several weeks for dopamine production to become stable again. Now, imagine all of this, but for months, and years. That is depression. Constant pressure from surroundings such as school, leads to constant sadness, a lack of the three chemicals and an increase in Monoamine oxidase and Adrenaline. And it get's so bad, the brain develops anxiety, twisting everything to fit it as an attack, an insult, something bad. A loop. That's why Depression doesn't go away without help. By whom were they depleted? The brain itself to make processing easier and to protect itself. In no way am I saying Jesus is wrong, but these things are very real. And if your child get's diagnosed with clinical depression, if your friend gets clinical depression, the last thing they need is a bible. What they need is support, therapy, and a change in surroundings. Maybe why no Christian has "Never" had depression, is because they have hope. They had a decent childhood, (I'm not gonna assume though, idk) Sorry for the long post, but this is what was needed to explain.
Thank you for replying. It is true that there are chemicals in the brain. They constitute part of "the flesh" and their responses, although chemical reactions in the narrowest sense, are responses to events in the world of fleshly desires. These include different types of fear: the flight response, the fight response and the freeze response. For instance the desire to run off very quickly is the flight response and requires neurotransmitters to activate muscles and so on.

Christians follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and seek to emulate His example. The only exception is that we cannot allow ourselves to be killed so a gift of sinlessness may be offered to others. Christians, in this case, are people who have accepted that offer.

If the love of God is no more than a certain configuration of neurotransmitters and hormones, surely a system of "meditation" could be developed to evoke that configuration? And sure enough there are people who do say that, or something similar using words from an era when no-one had heard of neurotransmitters. They do not acknowledge Christ, therefore they are not Christians. They are not part of a group commanded to be perfect.

Some of them propose "gods" and some do not. Tantric yoga would be an example of the first and prostrating oneself before the buddha is an example of the second. It could be argued that anything one prostrates oneself before in that moment becomes. a god but I'm not commenting on that specifically.

Rather I'm considering God as described in The Bible. It's impossible for us to see the world as He does. For example, God created time. We exist within it. Perhaps you could say we are inside looking out while He is outside looking in. One day, however, God entered into time. Knowing that we could never appreciate His perspective He was nevertheless able to explain what we should do in the situation He now understood from both sides. Obviously some of those things are surprising, because we only see a small part of the picture. To use your example, our responses are limited to the interactions between neurotransmitters and hormones which in turn are influenced by all sorts of extraneous things. The fragrance of a perfume or the barking of a rabid dog all elicit desires having little to do with the Heavenly realm. The Bible..our only source for what Jesus taught..records God's encouragement (if we are to be His disciples) as follows:

PEOPLE WE MUST HATE
  • Christians are disciples of Jesus.
  • Jesus commands Christians to hate:
    • their own lives
    • their sisters
    • their brothers
    • all their children
    • their wives.
    • their mothers
    • their fathers

EVIDENCE
Luke 14:25-27 And there went great multitudes with him: and he [Jesus] turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

Note: wives are not permitted to hate their Husbands.
