I just get so fed up with luke warm christians who have never read the Bible talking of 'gentle Jesus meek and mild'. Yes, Jesus is but at other times He knew that a preemptive violent attack with a weapon is the best option.
John 2:13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
15And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
So Jesus went into the temple then left to make His weapon and then later returned to attack the money changers all tooled up.
Jesus knew how to deal with problems.

Praise. And let us not forget that He did so TWICE.
St. John relates how Our Lord cleansed the temple at the beginning of His mission (as you just quoted) whereas Sts. Matthew, Mark and Luke tell of another temple cleansing at the end of His mission - a few days before the crucifixion:
Mark 11:15 And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
Mark 11:16 And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
Jesus started AND ended His mission with violent attacks on the unbelievers.
