I see three reasons.
The first is that we are Europeans, so there tend to be a lot of homers here. I'm sure I don't need to remind you of that.
The second is that we have been conquered even more times. Romans, Goths (the real ones I mean, not the Robert Smith lookalikes), Vikings, Austrians, Spanish, Dutch, French, Germans... they all had a go at us. So it's rather obvious that JESUS doesn't love us and we're not really good at fighting back.
The third is that we are too busy fighting amongst ourselves. We have two different un-English languages here, which produces so much phlegm that our 3 tanks and 15 FAL rifles have rusted.
The fourth is that they have nukes and we don't. And we can't count.
