1 Samuel 14:50-51 says Ner is Abiel's son and Saul's uncle.
I have read several theories about how to work all of this out, but all of them involve the Bible being wrong, so those theories aren't worth anything.
It is obvious to me that Ner was Kish's father, and Abiel was Kish's
mother
. Ner was probably not an Israelite, and that's why Saul's ancestry was traced through his grandmother in 1st Samuel. Kish was still a Benjamite through his mother Abiel. Ner was probably related to Goliath, and that's why Saul was so tall.
The Ner who was Saul's uncle and Abiel's son in 1 Samuel 14 would a Ner Jr. named after his father. He and Kish were brothers.
Lucid.
