Honestly, I know it's perfectly common to change your name in England, for example if you have an embarrassing name like Pigg, Smellie or Gruntfuttock, but I think it's illegal to do so in order to deceive people, which is what happened here when they were pretending not to be enemies of the state.
Quote:
The House of Windsor came into being in 1917, when the name was adopted as the British Royal Family's official name by a proclamation of King George V, replacing the historic name of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Winsor remains the family name of the current Royal Family.

Saxe-Coburg-Goth wasn't even a very historic name, was it? It only started when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert (a
most UnGodly man, if the images on Google are anything to go by - Leviticus 19:28). And after his death, she reverted to her maiden name of Mrs Brown, so the family already had a perfectly serviceable name.
But they weren't even content with Winsor. I think they have changed it again since then, haven't they Brother Bathfire, so that they are now called Battenburg Windsor, which sounds like a sort of cake. If they had stuck with Brown, they could have added Winsor to that and become Brown Windsor.
