The whole horn things comes from the fact, that in the Bible, there is often used the contrast between sheep, which are obedient (to God in metaphor) and goats, who are more disobedient (to God in metaphor) so the devil was given horns in popular imagery to make use of that and show the images biblical relevancy in explaining spiritual matters, something like that anyway.

The reason the vikings wore bull's horns on their heads was because it gave them the impression of being charging bulls and at the time, in Europe, a bull was about the most fearsome animal. Indians have used bear tooths to decorate themselves, Mayans have used jaguar pelts to show manliness, etc, I suspect fishermen use shark's teeth to the same effect, in third world countries.

Here is what the Romans would wear into combat, at least the leaders:

Is that anymore practical? It's about sending a symbolic gesture, in this case, a horse's mane, because a horse is a strong animal, as a brush, as a symbol of discipline and rectitude, that's my first thoughts anyway, you can find history books that will explain it better and use sources from the time. By the way, there is a Roman centurion mentioned in the Bible, he would have had something like that, and Jesus would have known about it. It's all tied together. History and faith.

Why do you constantly brag of the manliness of your wife, Seth. What is wrong with you.

Regards.
