Default Day 55. Deuteronomy 13-15 - 10-29-2007, 06:27 PM

Deuteronomy 13-15

In today's Bible in a Year reading we continue with Moses second sermon, before the people go to take over the promised land.

Today we get:
  • Who to kill for trying to get the people to follow another god
  • Some rules
  • A re-listing of clean/unclean beasts/fish/fowl
  • Slavery rules
Deuteronomy 13

1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,

If he tells you that you are to follow other gods... well...

Don't listen to him... and

5 And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.

Death for a prophet or dreamer who says to follow another god.

6 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;

If someone in your family (obviously YOU wouldn't do that) says to go serve other gods.

9 But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

10 And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

YOU should be the first. He is to be stoned.

12 If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,

13 Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;

If another city wants to follow other gods...

15 Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.

16 And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the LORD thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again.

Kill everyone and everything in the city. Burn it down, and leave it as a smouldering pile of rubble FOREVER!

Deuteronomy 14

1 Ye are the children of the LORD your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead.

No EMO's! And if you get rid of the unibrow, it had better not be for a dead person!

3 Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing.

Moses then reiterates the lists from Leviticus 11. Which we covered here on day 33.

21 Ye shall not eat of anything that dieth of itself: thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is in thy gates, that he may eat it; or thou mayest sell it unto an alien: for thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

Anything that dies on its own is unclean, the jew isn't to eat it, he can, however, sell it to a non-hebe.

Also, the seethe a kid in it's mother's milk, from Exodus 23:19, is reiterated.

Moses then commands the people to take care of the Levites.

Deuteronomy 15

1 At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release.

2 And this is the manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the LORD's release.

If someone owes you money, you are to let the debt go after 6 years. But only for fellow joos.

3 Of a foreigner thou mayest exact it again: but that which is thine with thy brother thine hand shall release;

A non-hebe, you can continue to charge interest for as long as you want.

7 If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:

8 But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.

The keywords there, are OF THY BRETHREN. Non-joos can stay poor and you don't have to help them. But if someone is a fellow hooknosedjoo, then you have to take care of them.

12 And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.

You have to free jew slaves on the seventh year.

AND, you have to give them stuff when they go.

If he doesn't want to leave after seven years, then he's yours forever.

17 Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy maidservant thou shalt do likewise.

So, basically to show that he's yours, you nail him to the door.

19 All the firstling males that come of thy herd and of thy flock thou shalt sanctify unto the LORD thy God: thou shalt do no work with the firstling of thy bullock, nor shear the firstling of thy sheep.

God gets the firstborn males of the flocks, before they do any work; unless they aren't perfect. (He also took the Levites, instead of the firstborn males of the people).

Oh, and don't eat blood.

23 Only thou shalt not eat the blood thereof; thou shalt pour it upon the ground as water.

So what have we learned today?

1. You have to release jews from their debt after 6 years, you don't have to do the same to others.
2. You have to release jew slaves after 6 years, unless they don't wanna go.
3. Kill prophets/dreamers of dreams; family members; and entire cities who recommend to follow other gods.
