Hang on a second! This is a parenting forum and I believe I'm entitled to throw in my two cents worth. He openly admitted "beating" his daughter and grand daughter. In many countries obesity is getting out of hand but yet you condemn something why simply and innocently promotes excercise. Nothing more. I've got no problem with disipline, but 'beating', as you put it, your own grand daughter is disgusting. I wish more kids got off their backsides from watching tv all day and did more physical activity.
