I'd blame the furries if I could, but it looks like we have the Italian papists to thank for this one.
Mask wearing dates back to the 13th Century with the Carnival of Venice where mask wearing Venetians could engage in various illicit activities - like clandestine affairs, anonymous sex, sin and debauchery without being identified. I'm sure that this was a big fund raiser for the cathylick clergy - selling inducgences, bead slinging for sin absolution, and wafer sales at the end of these yearly "festivals".
On the positive side, the Venetian masks were quite decorative and often colorful - unlike the masks that Facist Fauci is forcing us to wear.
