It's creeping communism at its worst. Everything going along nicely, houses and gardens well cared for, a nice roast dinner served with salad or roast vegetables and a proper cigar waiting with the port for later when the breadwinner returns home. Suddenly the same amount of work (incidentally during a period producing the biggest growth in history in manufacturing, financial services, agriculture, recreation, transport, medicine and so on) gets to be done by twice the number of people. Result? Half the pay in real terms so whether you want to or not, every household needs to be double income just to stand still. Essentially though, still the same number of jobs or less probably due to automation. Quick! Enrol your daughters in the university of tractor maintenance now!
