June 24 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. beat top-ranked Spain 2-0 to advance to the final of soccer’s Confederations Cup.

Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey scored the goals at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein to end European champion Spain’s record streak of 15 straight wins. A victory for Spain would have given it a record run of 36 games unbeaten.

Bob Bradley’s team, which had the lowest points total of any team to make the semifinals in the eight-nation event, withstood a barrage of attacks to become the first team to beat Spain since Romania in November 2006, 36 matches ago.

The U.S. will meet Brazil or South Africa, who play in the second semifinal tomorrow, in the June 30 final.

The U.S. took the lead through its Spain-based 19-year-old Altidore in the 27th minute. The Villarreal player turned Joan Capdevila and beat Iker Casillas to net the U.S.’s first goal against Spain in 59 years.

Clint Dempsey scores the game's second goal

The U.S. doubled the advantage with 15 minutes to go, when substitute Benny Feilhaber charged up the field and played the ball to captain Landon Donovan, whose cross fell for Dempsey to score.

With five minutes to go Michael Bradley became the third U.S. player to be sent off in the competition.
