The cops might make a mess and throw your papers about. This way the government spies on us nice and conveniently. I'm pretty sure that's what the founders had in mind when they wrote the fourth amendment.

Yes, that's a very important legal point. It's only spying if the person being spied on can prove it . Nixon would have been totally innocent had he just not let his cronies get discovered. The onus is on the person being spied on to do their own research. It's not our government's responsibility to reveal or investigate that they're breaking the law.
