The New York City, Cincinnati, St Louis and Chicago political machines that got Steward, Chase, Blair and Lincoln into office. Lincoln was elected by Northern voters on the promise of promoting his radical anti-property rights agenda by refusing to enforce the Constitutionally protected Fugitive Slave act of 1850. That meant any slave could self-theft himself into the North and not be prosecuted for his crimes. Agree or disagree with slavery it was the law in 1859.
